German politicians have signed an agreement on "automated and networked driving" with China with #MIIT, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Do they know that MIIT is connected horizontally at multiple levels to #MSS, the Ministry of State Security? You won't be told this by the CCP - I learned it from engineers who worked for state-owned enterprises belonging to MIIT during years of living and reporting in China. Volker Wissing Dr. Franziska Brantner Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD) if you don't know this kind of vital information, why are you signing agreements in China? If you do know, do you consider this a safe situation - and why did you sign this agreement? As a journalist, I believe the public deserves answers. Dr Andreas Fulda Dr Alicia H. 🌐 imec CEO advocates global collaboration in chips industry, warns against regional self-sufficiency🔧 During the imec Technology Forum (ITF) in Taiwan, celebrating Imec's 40th anniversary, CEO Luc Van den hove stressed the importance of global collaboration over regional self-sufficiency in the semiconductor industry. With the rise of the China+1 strategy and regional efforts like the US, EU, and Japan’s Chips Acts, Van den hove cautioned against fragmentation. He argued that pursuing self-sufficiency could lead to mediocrity and inefficiency, advocating instead for leveraging global expertise to solve complex R&D challenges. He highlighted Taiwan’s TSMC as a crucial global partner, stating that it's more beneficial for regions like Europe to collaborate with semiconductor giants rather than trying to replicate all technologies locally. He also praised TSMC’s recent fab expansion in Europe, which will serve industries like automotive and strengthen European-Taiwanese partnerships. Despite growing geopolitical tensions and a trend towards de-globalization, Van den hove remains a firm believer in global partnerships as essential for future innovation in the semiconductor sector. Reflecting on Imec’s 40-year journey, he attributed their success to open innovation and a strong global network that has fostered partnerships with leading companies like Intel, Samsung, TSMC, and SK Hynix. Imec’s role in shaping the future of the semiconductor industry is built on leveraging international strengths, investing in state-of-the-art infrastructure, and maintaining a diverse talent pool. With continued R&D expansion, including new cleanroom facilities, Imec is well-positioned to drive progress in advanced semiconductor technologies, including sub-2 nm processes. #SemiconductorIndustry #GlobalCollaboration #Imec40 #Innovation #ChipsAct #KOTRA #KoreanTech #TSMC #SemiconTaiwan https://lnkd.in/d7bSPWWb

The annual Gartner IT Symposium is one of the largest gatherings of enterprise technology peers and partners spanning across all industries. I've tried for years to get some of the CRE-specific vendors to get involved and attend as a way to help bridge the gap that exists between the often closed-off CRE world, and other traditional industries. This year, I know of several CRE vendors and peers who will be in attendance, which is a testament to the growth of the CRE technology space (I'm done saying "prop tech"). This years agenda is heavy on AI, and the keynote will be with none other than Jensen Huang of NVIDIA. With the recent rate cuts, higher levels of return-to-office, and companies competing to differentiate themselves from competitors, I see 2025 being an exciting and pivotal year for all things technology related. I look forward to seeing those in my network in a few short weeks! https://lnkd.in/ebvRZ4B6

On Monday our CEO Stew Edmondson attended a Labour Party Conference Fringe Event with Chi Onwurah and Samantha Niblett MP, hosted by TechWorks and Palace Yard, which focused on how we can secure the UK Semiconductor Industry. A key message from all of the industry participants was about the vital importance of access to talent to support their growth plans. We advocate that the only sustainable solution to the overall skills shortage is to invest in the skills pipeline right from primary school. Tackling the shortage means a national-level, long-term programme to incentivise more young people to pursue the study of Electronics and semiconductors. Another point made in the discussion was about gender imbalance in our sector. Through our successful “Girls into Electronics” programme, we are starting to see increased interest and engagement. Overall, through our programmes, more than 100 employers are demonstrating their commitment to supporting young people to develop the skills that the industry needs. With continued support from industry and government leadership, we can work together to tackle the skills challenge.
Thank you to Charles Sturman and TechWorks for bringing together a wonderful roundtable lunch at Labour Party conference on Securing the UK Semiconductor Industry - and a special thanks to Chi Onwurah MP, the newly-elected chair of the influential Science, Innovation and Technology select committee and Samantha Niblett MP, newly-elected Member of Parliament for South Derbyshire for your time and engagement. We were also lucky to be joined by some of the leading players in the UK semiconductor world bringing their perspectives and challenges - but most of all, explaining why semiconductors are so vital not just in achieving net zero, the space race and, frankly, all technological progress from smart phones, to quantum and AI. Semiconductors make everything happen. Thank you all those for coming and sorry for those of you stuck on flooded motorways and trains. We'll follow up with something in London! Peter Stephens, Richard Price, Stan Boland, Frazer Anderson, Eamon O'Gorman, Sheron Shamuilia, UK Electronics Skills Foundation (UKESF) Stewart Edmondson, Arwel Evans, Mark Tippett, Simon Thomas FREng, Stuart Tooley, Leonie White, Jack Cryer, Jonathan Collins Thank you to the amazing team at the The Racquet Club Hotel & Venue for whom nothing was too much trouble! Thank you also to David J Colbran. Wonderful photographs!

There are many things that can be criticised in the proposal of the Bundesnetzagentur regarding the 2025 mobile spectrum allocation, not only the fact that no auction is foreseen and, as the Bundeskartellamt pointed out, a fourth MNO may not be forthcoming under these conditions, but also the quite general conceptional point that without access obligation, there is simply no reason for MNOs to provide access to service providers. That this is detrimental to customers of mobile services and also reduces investments in the mobile network should be obvious. Why the Bundesnetzagentur is going down that road is less clear. Check out the paper of my co-authors and myself on these points. #spectrum #auction #Bundesnetzagentur #Verhandlungsgebot #Diensteanbieterverpflichtung #competition
ABC economics is happy to announce that the article on the modalities of the upcoming mobile spectrum allocation in 2025 in Germany by Prof. Dr. Frank P. Maier-Rigaud, Dr. Lukas Block and Daniel Klein titled “How does competition work in mobile markets?” (Wie geht Wettbewerb im Mobilfunkmarkt?) appeared in the June edition of the journal Neue Zeitschrift für Kartellrecht (NZKart, 6/2024 p. 280-289). The working paper can be accessed online here: https://lnkd.in/dZqSQygt The paper discusses how the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) plans to waive a service provider obligation (Diensteanbieterverpflichtung) in the upcoming spectrum allocation. Due to the close link between the wholesale and the retail markets, there are no incentives for MNOs to offer wholesale products without such an obligation. Along with the ongoing development in technology, the expiring access obligations from earlier frequency allocations and the requirements of the European Commission lead to a continuously deteriorating competitive situation in the mobile market. According to § 105 of the Telecommunications Act (TKG), there is therefore no leeway to waive a service provider obligation. #BNetzA #Dienstanbieterverpflichtung #Verhandlungsgebot
