The Citadel alumni Rob Rennebaum, PE, ‘84, Greg Bolen, PE, ‘97, Kyle Duncan, ‘99, and Cody Floyd, PE, ’18, were back on campus last week in Charleston, SC, reconnecting with their mentors while engaging with the next generation of innovative engineers. Rob, Greg & Cody served as guest instructors for two sophomore classes of ‘Survey 205,’ hosted by Professor and Department Head Dr. Jeff Davis, PE. They led a discussion on what to expect post-graduation including the importance of surveying in today’s civil engineering industry, life skills such as financial planning and money management, and what extra steps to take now that will enhance their entry into the job market. Greg, Kyle & Rob also reunited with one of their most impactful and influential professors during their time at The Citadel, retired Professor Thomas R. Dion, PE, PLS, class of ’68. Professor Dion taught a variety of classes throughout their freshman to senior years, such as a notable Land Development Course that included a Senior Capstone Land Development Project. He literally wrote the book on the course (along with many others!), and his invaluable lessons are still applied and referenced in the SW office today. Also included is an alumni feature from The Citadel Magazine – 1999! #civilengineering #citadelbulldogs #collegementors #fbf

Digital infrastructure created under SmartCitiesMission (SCM) is expected to generate and use large volumes of data from varied digital sources. It is thus necessary that a robust system should be put in place to protect digital platforms from #cyberattack and to ensure that sensitive public and private data is adequately protected and safeguarded REF: https://lnkd.in/def-cwiG Kudos to Khushi Shah for being brave and bold to have chosen (unlike many among her cohort) the 'road not taken' to co-investigate #cyberresiliency of ICCCs in Smart Cities. Wishing her good luck, while looking forward to her making an impactful study, and drawing meaningful insights. KUDOS is beyond an academic lab, the landmark for urban innovation at FLAME University. Khushi Shah, the first UG student researcher of KUDOS at FLAME University has embarked on cutting-edge research with the curiosity and passion to protect the nation's critical infrastructure. Her thesis revolves around Assessing Vulnerabilities to Cyber-Physical Risks in Safety-critical Urban Infrastructures such as #ICCCs and forging Resiliency to make #SmartCities also safer places to live. Early today she facilitated a real-life risk assessment workshop among UG1 student cohort of #DigitalLiteracy course. Together with her, Prof. Balaji KALLURI, PhD conducted today's workshop equipping UG1 students with #cyberresiliency as a part of their foundational courses on the following key aspects to: 1. Critical Observation of Systems 2. Risk: Concepts, Terminologies and Taxonomy 3. Risk Perception 4. Carry out Qualitative Cyb-Phy Risk Analysis Thanks to Sheba Philip George and Shweta Kumari for inviting us for this guest lecture. Stay tuned to learn more about our/her research methods, tools, findings, etc. Enquires are warmly welcome too :-)

Our Winchester, Virginia plant hosted professors and students from the University of Notre Dame and Clemson University to set up and pour specimens for the Precast Buckling-Restrained Braced (BRB) Frame Research Project. These were some of the most complicated pieces that our drafters, engineers, and plant associates have seen to date. The level of care shown by all, including our two Winchester summer interns who were able to be involved in this unique work, was second to none. After months of meetings, analytical work, developing drawings, lots of work to refine the details, and securing the materials needed, we successfully produced these frame specimens that will be tested at the University of Notre Dame in the coming months. The Precast BRB Frames research is a major, multi-year research project funded by the National Science Foundation, PCI, and many precast producers in conjunction with University of Notre Dame, Clemson University, and University of California San Diego to develop and codify a new seismic force-resisting system. The research consists of analytical work at Clemson, laboratory testing at UND, and shake table testing at UCSD. This major research project was born out of three PCI Jenny Fellowships that were awarded by the PCI R&D Council to Notre Dame and Clemson. Through the collaboration of those teams and advisory groups, we are seeing code changing research which is exciting to all who are involved. #thankyou #leaders #precastconcrete #educators #metromont

Yesterday, we had the privilege of hosting the annual High Sheriff Young Engineer Awards 2024. The ceremony is held to celebrate Oxfordshire’s future engineering talent. State schools across the county were invited to nominate students aged 12-18 across three age categories: Years 12 & 13, Years 10 & 11 and Years 8 & 9. 👩🔬 The awards are in their 13th year and are sponsored by Lucy Group, Engineering Trust Training and Abingdon and Witney College Prizes included £400 for the winning student in each category and £1,000 for the students’ respective school or college. There were also runner-up prizes in each category, a Team Award and an overall High Sheriff Award. 🏆 The judging panel reviewed an impressive calibre of entries this year, highlighting students who not only work hard but show great promise in the fields of Engineering, Resistant Materials, and Design Technology. Richard Dick, Executive Chairman at Lucy Group and founder of the Oxfordshire High Sheriff Young Engineer Awards, said: “𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘸’𝘴 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴; 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘦 𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘵.” 🌍 #LucyGroup #Oxford #HighSheriffAwards #HighSheriffAwardsOxford #Engineering #DesignTechnology #FutureLeaders #ResistantMaterials #Awards #EngineeringAwards #Students #Sustainability

"#College is and will continue to be an important #pathway. We should be working to make the #highereducation system more understandable, affordable, and valuable for everyone who wants to go to college—or needs to for their chosen field.
