Plants have some impressive tricks up their sleeves: they can defend themselves against insects with thorns, hairs, or the production of toxins. So, what can we learn from them? 🔎 Our researchers are using these natural strategies to protect our plants from major crop pests like the cabbage-steam flea beetle🌱 While reductions in the use of plant protection products and climate change are driving the spread of pests worldwide, the development of insect resistance is more important than ever. ➡️The job for our colleague Aurélie Bak and her team? To identify the mechanism the plant uses to defend itself against insects, and the genes behind it. This way, crop resistance traits can be developed. But it is a challenging task: insects are difficult to control, being very mobile and bringing with them a multitude of possibilities to attack plants. Want to know how Aurélie and her colleagues are taking on the challenge? 💧 According to the United Nations, wetlands cover 6% of the Earth’s surface, and are home to 40% of the world’s plant & animal species. Wetlands are essential to agriculture as they act as natural water filtration systems and floodplains during the rainy seasons, with some of the most nutrient-rich soil in the world. 🏘️ Rapid expansion of towns & cities globally, and the need for more farmland has led to the destruction of large parts of our wetlands. When the natural water system is disrupted, it can lead to areas of stagnant, unfiltered water; the perfect environment for water-borne plant & crop diseases such as Erwinia amylovora, Potato Virus Y (PVY) and Phytophthora to thrive. 👉 These #plantdiseases can be detected in-field, in minutes, using our range of rapid tests. Tests are simple to use, with no training required. We invite you to learn more about our disease detection range online via the website at https://bit.ly/3w317YD or read the latest blog posts from our guest contributors. #agriculture #watersystems #filtration #environmentalconservation #diseaseprevention

Humanity’s need for food security is more important than ever before. Our food begins at the farm gate, and the agricultural industry is a critical component of the global food system. At the same time, climate change is causing significant challenges for agriculture, including unpredictable weather patterns, droughts, fires, and floods. The food security agenda is inherently related to climate change, natural resources, and ecosystems. As this session keynote presenter, CGIAR Executive Managing Director Ismahane Elouafi shared case studies of evidence-led CGIAR innovations that meet the climate challenge, while also responding to the needs of farmers and consumers and protecting planetary resources. Some examples she presented include Peskas, which uses real-time data on small-scale fisheries to support Timor-Leste fishermen and spatial maps to assess flood and drought impacts as a tool for innovative crop insurance. We’re so hap-pea, it’s National Agriculture Day! Experts from our Aquatic and Crop Resource Development Research Centre, the University of Calgary and partners are like peas in a pod. They’re improving the climate resilience and reducing the carbon footprint of field peas, with the goal of making them less susceptible to root rot and drought. Climate-resilient peas provide a high-protein crop with a minimal carbon footprint and greater value to the Canadian economy. https://ow.ly/342M50QWvvo #NationalAgDay #NRCAgResearch #GenomicTechnologies Genome Canada
