Things are happening in Stavanger kommune - our local municipality! Nordic Edge has just finished three days of conference and workshops under the title Nordic Edge Expo - Be the Change! The entire event was opened by Mayor Sissel Knutsen Hegdal, and now.. just one day after the conference we can read about a new measure for our city to live within the limitations that the planet provides - a sustainable city that does not contribute to world where future generations are denied the opportunity to also get a good life. That we can limit the use of our resources! Our dear commentator Leif Tore Lindø in the local newspaper Aftenbladet wrote after the conference about men in fast jackets and women in busy shoes, who all plan to save the world with technological optimism. Despite his distanced skepticism, he nevertheless concluded that perhaps it is these people who will ultimately save the world "one piece at a time." The conclusion was that he was not completely convinced, but "doesn't rule out that such innovators and smart city types are the ones who tweak things a little bit each each day and adjust the thousand cogs that have to be changed." And that these people in the end will help "us a small step in the right direction." Back in the UK after few very interesting and thought provoking days at RILEM Association Spring Convention 2024. Many thanks to Liberato Ferrara 's team. An amazing organising committee! Thanks for the hospitality! The event was a good chance to meet friends and colleagues and to get the discussions going. Three key take home messages (for me at least): ❗️1. We have discussed too much for the needed to "change" and the "shift to sustainability". It is time for action! "The net zero needs to be built. We can built it together!" (José Andrade, 2024)! ❗️2. We cannot do No1 above in isolation. We need to share (and share widely) resources. That goes for both expertise and laboratory facilities! ❗️3. Rapid urbanisation rates are a reality; trying to ignore it, is pointless. Equally, we cannot raise the finger (around CO2 and climate change) to developing societies. It is our duty as engineers and scientists to find ways to support development within the sustainability framework. EAE meeting Dosteba at BAU 2025 As mentioned earlier, the BAU 2025 exhibition in Munich turned out to be an #EAE family meeting. Here Managing Director met with Michael Menden and Marcus Menden at the Dosteba Deutschland booth. With their product range Dosteba supports quality #ETICS by providing tools for proper installation and a broad variety of special fixing solutions to attach accessories to thermally insulated external walls - safely but without thermal bridges. Great to have the entire ETICS value chain as EAE members to jointly promote durable #facade insulation systems. #Durabiliy is a key element for the #sustainability. Last week we have the honor of receiving two experts in LCA calculation for building materials! In the fight against global warming, till now the efforts have been mainly focused on how we generate the energy we use for our day-to-day activities, and on how we move from one place to another. However, experts believed that a big impact on carbon emission reduction can be obtained also by doing some small changes on how we build things. The construction sector is responsible for almost 40% of the GHG emissions worldwide, and this share is similar in Uruguay too. To tackle these emissions, one of the first thing we need to know is how much emissions are associated with the business as usual scenario (our current way of building). LCA calculations are the best option for measuring the impact of products and services on climate change. With this in mind, in Latitud - Fundación LATU we are working on a project for the development of a local LCA database of the construction products and services in Uruguay. For this project we are joining forces with the Centro de Producción Más Limpia / Universidad de Montevideo and experts of VTT from Finland. It´s been a pleasure to meet you Tiina Vainio-Kaila and Petr Hradil!! We are lucky of learing from your experience in how Finland is doing to mitigate it´s carbon emissions form the construction sector in order to reach it´s net-zero climate targets in 2035. Sebjørn Dahl’s urge to design the most future proof ro-ro vessel back in 2020 has turned out as a key catalyst to the transformation of Höegh Autoliners . Our IPO in 2021 was made to raise funding for the first four 9100 ceu multi fuel ready Aurora class vessels. We came early and prepared to the newbuild race, and will meet 2027 with the most modern, cost effective and environmentally friendly car carrier fleet in the world. When we launched the Aurora project, no PCTC in the order book was larger than 7500 ceu and all vessels were conventionally designed. All new projects after our launch are 9000 ceu+ and have copied important elements of our design and as such confirmed the innovativeness. Except that escalating yard costs and delivery times have made most new projects cut back on real future fuel preparedness. With clean ammonia maturing a lot faster than expected as a shipping fuel, we look forward to leveraging the fuel optionality of the Aurora class to become a first mover on zero-carbon deep sea shipping. There is a lot of cheap talk on decarbonizing shipping, but at Höegh Autoliners actions speak louder than words! #SailingForSustainability
