Volkswagen and US company QuantumScape announced on Thursday that the German automaker has successfully secured #production of solid-state batteries, a move that will enable the technology to be incorporated into more cars. According to an agreement made public on Thursday, PowerCo, the battery division of Volkswagen, will be granted the right to mass-produce #batterycells utilizing QuantumScape technology, subject to advancements in technology and specific royalties, the company stated. According to Volkswagen, the agreement replaces a prior #jointventure between the two businesses. Volkswagen's annual report states that the company owns 17% of QuantumScape, with a #currentmarket value of $459 million. On the news, QuantumScape's shares shot up 40% in pre-market trading. According to the deal, Volkswagen's battery division PowerCo can use QuantumScape technology to produce up to 40 gigawatt-hours (GWh) yearly, with the possibility to increase to 80 GWh. This amount is sufficient to outfit about one million cars each year, they claimed. Solid-state batteries can store more energy than conventional liquid #electrolytebatteries. Automakers and analysts expect them to accelerate the move to EVs by solving the frequently restricted range, which remains a big consumer worry. "QuantumScape's technology is poised to enter a pivotal stage where PowerCo's specialized expertise, resources and global factories can help facilitate the transition to industrial-scale production," according to PowerCo CEO Frank Blome. The #firmsplan to develop a product that can be scaled up and integrated into a Volkswagen Group vehicle series. The arrangement succeeds the two businesses' joint venture to co-manufacture #batteries, which was formed in 2018. https://lnkd.in/fzpnPPW #ElectricVehicles #EV #BatteryTech #SolidStateBatteries #CleanEnergy #Sustainability #QuantumScape #NextGenBattery #EVRevolution #Innovation #ChargingSpeed #FastChargingEV #Electrification #PowerCo #Transportation #ElectricCars Volkswagen QuantumScape

One of the most fascinating aspects of the automotive world is how unpredictable it is. Despite many years of working in this industry, we still encounter information that is difficult to process and explain rationally. In recent days, the media reported that Volvo - one of the OEMs at the forefront of fleet electrification (the first reports of the company's departure from ICE technology date back to 2020!) - is relaxing its earlier commitments due to consumer preferences. After analyzing sales statistics, the brand's executives have no doubt that they cannot afford to eliminate internal combustion engines. They will continue to offer them in the form of mild hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrains. And here - at least in theory - there is no surprise. Sales results speak for themselves - where subsidies ended, demand for electric cars fell. But there is more to the story. The majority (100%) shareholder in Volvo is the Chinese company Geely. This OEM has just announced the introduction of a lithium-iron-phosphate Short Blade battery, which - if the claims are to be believed - solves a large part of the problems faced by electromobility. Durability of over 1 million kilometers (an estimated lifespan of 50 years), charging from 10% to 80% in 17 minutes, fire resistance, and very good tolerance to low temperatures (90.54% capacity at -30°C). Moreover, the battery has already been tested and is reportedly ready for use in vehicles. Purely theoretically, Volvo has a technology that could make electromobility truly competitive with internal combustion engines. Such a decisive step back with this level of technology is very strange and may indicate one of two things: 👉 Either market research has shown that even a technological revolution will not convince customers to embrace electromobility. 👉 Or Geely's "miracle battery" is not as good in practice as it is on paper, and analyses have shown that this technology cannot attract new customers. This is a very interesting situation that we are closely monitoring 🧐. The new Geely battery has caused quite a stir in our office, and we have had many discussions about how realistic the manufacturer's promises are. In this context, Volvo's new strategy raises some doubts. Whether these doubts are justified - we will find out when the first products with Geely's Short Blade battery hit the streets and end up in the hands of tech geeks. #news #automotive #electromobility #volvo #geely #newbattery

“The 56-year-old founder and chairman of the world’s top electric vehicle (EV) battery-maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL) struck an upbeat note in a recent interview with Caixin, saying that construction work on the company’s $3.5 billion U.S. plant with Ford is ‘progressing smoothly’ and that the prospects for EVs in China are ever brighter. However, he also acknowledged the challenges the Fujian province-based giant faces, including regulatory challenges in Europe and the difficulty of commercializing solid-state batteries, a technology that could bring an end to the ‘range anxiety’ that wards off some potential EV buyers. Progress at the Ford Motor Co. plant in Michigan shows the value of the company’s licensing, royalty and service (LRS) business model, under which automakers can produce batteries using know-how and services provided by CATL, Robin Zeng Yuqun told Caixin. Ford first announced the BlueOval Battery Park Michigan plant in February 2023.” “The project quickly encountered problems, including resistance from the Republican chairs of two U.S. House of Representative committees who in July sent a joint letter to Ford CEO Jim Farley seeking more information about the deal. In September last year, a Ford spokesperson said work on the plant would stop ‘until we’re confident about our ability to competitively operate the plant.’ That announcement came soon after the United Auto Workers union began a six-week strike at Ford and other U.S. carmakers. Ford resumed construction on the factory in November, but said it would reduce the plant’s annual production capacity by roughly 43%, which includes delaying $12 billion in spending on battery-powered models. The company said at the time that the date for initial production at the facility remained unchanged at 2026. In recent years, CATL has doubled down on its plans for global dominance with a focus on dominance in Europe” “In October 2019, CATL kicked off construction of its first overseas plant in Germany, which was up and running in December 2022. In August 2022, the firm announced it would build its second overseas factory in Hungary, whose construction is set to be completed in 2025. It has a designed annual production capacity of 100 gigawatt-hours, enough to power more than 1 million cars. The company also signed a deal in November to work with European carmaker Stellantis NV to supply the latter with battery cells and modules for its EVs in Europe. However, CATL’s expansion into Europe faces regulatory challenges. In August 2023, the EU put into force its Batteries Regulation that the European Commission says ‘aim(s) to make batteries sustainable throughout their entire life cycle.’ CATL, which has long dominated its home market, is now closing in on South Korea’s LG to become the No. 1 supplier of EV batteries in markets outside of China.”
