What roles do volunteers play in promoting Habitability? We are in El Salvador this week to understand Habitability from the lens of people-centered development. What makes a house habitable and is it a product or a process? How should we strengthen our definitions and criteria so we can measure effectively and how does it build from or connect with basic services? Against the backdrop of empowered participation, how should we strengthen and formalize volunteering models so that local communities and families have the voice and the platform to drive improvements of their housing conditions? The field of community development is experiencing a period of unprecedented growth in both overall activity and capacity to deliver sustainable results in low-income and BIPOC communities across America. For over half a century, Grow America has envisioned a future where all our work included and supported sustainable green goals. Now, with funding through EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund - CCIA initiative, we can deliver more resources and include more solution partners in the process than ever before. This innovative collaboration led by Appalachian Community Capital is creating a framework with resources where committed partners are working create meaningful change, achieve greater impact, and support the needs of historically underserved rural communities like never before. As a business leader and neighbor, our decisions are shaped by guiding principles that we call the JKLH Creed. We believe in: ✳ Demonstrating the same care and respect to all communities that we touch as we do across our parent company JK Moving Services and sister company CapRelo. ✳The need for balance between preserving area lands for future generations and commercial development to support area economic growth. ✳Giving back, so we put approximately 44 acres into conservation easement for every 1 acre we develop commercially. ✳Smart development that benefits the area community in terms of jobs and tax revenue. ✳Demonstrating our commitment to the environment by preserving historically and environmentally important sites through conservation easement. ✳Committing time to work with the communities to listen to their wants and needs. ✳Partnering to clean up the environment for the community. It’s October and time to celebrate National Community Planning Month! The American Planning Association (APA) established National Community Planning Month. APA states, “Planners work to improve the well-being of all people living in our communities by taking a comprehensive perspective. This approach leads to safer, resilient, more equitable, and more prosperous communities. We celebrate the role that planning plays in creating great communities each October with National Community Planning Month.” QK’s expertise in land use and policy planning helps our clients develop common-sense solutions to complex planning problems. Our plans promote efficient and sustainable land development, incorporate development and redevelopment patterns that optimize existing infrastructure investments, and consume less land that can then remain available for agriculture, open space, and natural systems. From our friends at Nonprofit Quarterly "Making Land Back a Reality: An Urban Indigenous Land Trust Rises in California," featuring the Sogorea Te Land Trust As Corrina Gould states," I think Land Back at this stage is an international movement. We have heard of people giving land back to the Aboriginal movement in Australia. There’s a time when things change in the world. There is consciousness that is built. And it kind of takes off from there." At BLIS, we are committed to growing and supporting the movements for reparations, Land Back, and other transformative social movements. We believe in the power of collective action, narrative change, and the crucial role each individual's contributions play in these larger efforts. However, we recognize that movement participation must go beyond just belief in the movement -- it demands active engagement. This year, we are conducting research to understand the barriers to achieving what we call "Ocean Deep" solidarity and active engagement in transformative movements. From there, as an organization, we'll help movements overcome these barriers. https://lnkd.in/gkX_hSzw
