Hydrogen plays an important role in the chemicals and oil & gas industries. Hydrogen extracted from various processes is classified into three types: blue hydrogen, grey hydrogen, and green hydrogen. Grey hydrogen is hydrogen produced from fossil fuel resources where the carbon capture and storage process is not implemented. Furthermore, this type of hydrogen releases carbon dioxide into the environment as a byproduct. New entrant Cleanova has recently secured a contract to supply filtration systems for a multi-billion-dollar blue hydrogen facility in Louisiana, set to commence in 2026. The facility will produce over 750 million standard cubic feet per day of blue hydrogen and blue ammonia, capturing and sequestering 95% of its carbon dioxide emissions (and over 5 million tons annually) in Louisiana, making it the world’s largest carbon capture and sequestration project in development. Ammogen gathered at Tyseley Energy Park (TEP) to unveil the world's largest and most efficient ammonia to hydrogen conversion project. This transformative initiative is set to revolutionize the efficiency, reliability, and economics of ammonia cracking, with a monumental goal of delivering 200kg per day of transport-grade hydrogen. The innovative project leverages ammonia as a vector for global hydrogen transportation, employing state-of-the-art Ammonia cracker and purification technology to facilitate the conversion process. Notably, Ammogen aims to not only demonstrate the viability of ammonia cracking but also to influence UK political discourse and foster trade corridors between the UK and the burgeoning global hydrogen market. In collaboration with partners including the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), Gemserv, a Talan Company, H2SITE, EQUANS, Yara International, and the University of Birmingham, the Ammogen Consortium is dedicated to advancing hydrogen fuel supply chains both domestically and internationally. This technology represents a pivotal component of the hydrogen supply chain, offering a vital link in meeting the escalating global demand for hydrogen by utilizing ammonia as a medium for hydrogen shipping.
