One of Thrive’s unique roles in the community is to perform research and data analysis that provides useful information to inform decisions at multiple levels. In the housing sector, we analyzed existing data from the City of Asheville and produced a report called Opening Doors that reviewed how city investments can make access to housing more equitable. In the tourism sector, we gathered 34 community leaders to learn about sustainable tourism over 9-months. We hosted researchers and practitioners who are recognized globally and explored how other popular destinations are responding to increasing visitation, and we produced a report highlighting our findings called Destination Stewardship: Balancing Tourism and Local Resident Needs. Finally published online! Our book chapter, co-authored with Dr. Antony Wong, investigates the distinct natures of communities—both geographically and socio-anthropologically defined—and discusses their application of community-based tourism (CBT) as a universal development approach. This chapter extends the potential of CBT from predominantly rural contexts to other settings with examples. This timely Research Agenda, co-edited by Prof. Robin Nunkoo, Ph.D, Dr. Thanika D. Juwaheer and Dr. Siamak Seyfi, explores the crucial need to understand the social impact of tourism in order to manage industry growth sustainably. Highlighting the multifaceted nature of tourism, chapters uncover the intricate relationships between tourists and host communities and investigate this complex social fabric. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gizVM7yv Thank you my co-author, book editors, and Edward Elgar Publishing for continuous support throughout the process. #FOTCFriday 🌏 Guiding Principle 1 encourages us to see the whole picture - Recognize that most tourism by its nature involves the destination as a whole, not only industry businesses, but also its ecosystems, natural resources, cultural assets and traditions, communities, aesthetics, and built infrastructure. The recently launched $10 million Reset Tourism Fund aims to bridge this gap between the small, impactful tourism businesses representing the future of tourism and the necessary funding to elevate their business and impact to the next level. Following the difficulties faced by tourism businesses over the past few years, many had to either shut down or struggle to sustain operations. This new fund provides flexible capital empowering businesses to focus on their long-term growth instead of solely on the short-term. Regenerative Tourism - is it really a new concept? Or, is it just something that businesses, organisations and groups like to talk about. Think6 have always been involved in tourism experience development, tourism marketing and this is the new-ish way to elevate and market tourism. It is not just a tourism marketing strategy, it is a whole switch in the way we view our tourism industry and it is essential to get on board. Lots of words, and lots of inaction won't cut it any more. It is now imperative for people to embrace regeneration and for us especially, the regeneration of rural communities. Have a look at our recent blog, and why not have a go at answering the 6 questions. If you want to make a conscious effort to build a sustainable and regenerative tourism offering (or any business, organisation or group in general). #regenerativetourism #communitydevelopment #communitytourism #ruraltourism #sustainabletourism

☀️ "I seldom use the term ‘sustainable tourism’, because I believe that sustainability demands a multi-sectoral perspective – tourism is not independent but engages and competes with other sectors for the use of scarce resources such as land, labour, capital, water, energy, and waste assimilation capacity. I have borrowed the notion of sustainable livelihoods from rural studies to guide much of my recent work. I find this to be a more tangible concept to work with." > Geoffrey Wall, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Department of Geography and Environmental Management at University of Waterloo, Canada How would you define sustainable tourism? During Tina's TED Talk in 2021, we were reminded that tourism isn't just "on the line" — it's at the forefront of transformative change. Even though much has evolved since then, one thing remains clear: we're on a journey to redefine the way we approach tourism, from attracting visitors to fostering sustainable growth in our destinations. In our latest blog post, we delve into the crucial concept of shifting paradigms for sustainable tourism growth. From empowering communities to preserving natural resources, each theme holds the key to creating a brighter, more resilient future for tourism. However, we can no longer be observers; we need to be catalysts for change. It's up to us to take the lessons learned and translate them into actionable strategies that drive meaningful impact in our communities, which is the emphasis of our 12-week certificate programme for Tourism Destinations. Regenerative Tourism is not a trend. It is not a buzz-phrase. It is something every business, organisation and person should be thinking about if they are remotely involved in the tourism sector. More importantly it is time to take action. To embrace and leverage it for your own community, and the wider area. Read our latest blog and consider what you are doing as a tourism provider, as an organisation or even as an individual involved in the community. #communitytourism #regenerativetourism #tourismmarketing
