Did you know that the government will now fully fund apprenticeship costs for those under the age of 21 who are employed at small firms? More and more employers in the historic environment sector are feeling the benefits of employing apprentices, starting with recruitment. For more information on these funding changes: https://lnkd.in/ev-zeQtX An apprentice position will often attract high-calibre candidates who don’t want to pursue the university option, giving employers a greater choice in the pool of talent. There’s also the systematic training and learning, which results in a fully skilled, competent person at the end of the programme, with the right behavioural skills, who can really contribute to the workforce. The employer and apprentice are supported by a professional training organisation, right from the start. All apprentices spend 20% of their time in formal, off-the-job training which is designed and delivered by the training provider, based on the competence standards. 🚘 Unique opportunities for applied learning & travel ☔️ A hands-on internship alongside a local WKU alumnus 🏡 A second home here on the Hill Senior Jake Disinger chose WKU because of the strong meteorology program, but discovered a world of opportunities during his time on the Hill. "I never would have thought I would have the opportunity to travel and have these experiences, let alone speak at conferences [like the National Weather Association's Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh]," Disinger remarked. In one of his roles, Disinger is an intern for Weather or Not BG. Created by WKU alumnus Landon Hampton, WXorNot BG focuses on real-time weather monitoring and emergency preparedness for seven counties in South Central Kentucky. As part of his internship, Disinger prepares forecasts, writes blogs that explain weather phenomena to a non-technical audience and shares written and video updates on social media - especially in rapidly changing situations. "Something that solidified that this is what I want to do and what I am meant to do is the opportunity to help people. When we provided the forecast before the 2021 tornadoes, people who took our advice [to find shelter] and had their homes destroyed that night attributed a lot of their safety to our preparedness. Knowing that - in some indirect or direct way - we can help people or even save their lives is the most rewarding thing ever," Disinger reflected. Reflecting on advice he would like to share with future Hilltoppers, Disinger highlighted the value of taking initiative in your career. "Get out there and take chances on things. One of the reasons that I got the opportunity with WXorNot BG was because I sent my resume to the man in charge. You need to create these opportunities. Do not expect them to all come to you. You are going to get told 'no' a lot, but eventually, you are going to get an opportunity where someone says 'yes' and it will change your life," Disinger shared. I have successfully completed my internship at Coastal Construction. The experience was truly enriching; not only was I surrounded by remarkable individuals, but I was also deeply inspired by the company's work culture. My key takeaway from the internship is the allure of construction planning and scheduling. It captivated me so much that if I were to delve deeper into the construction field over the next couple of years, this is the exact department I'd wish to be a part of. The most important lesson I learned is that the construction industry is slow to adapt and most are afraid of change. To succeed, regardless of removing positions, departments or employees... there has to be adaptions to better ways and new technologies. If not, the competition will do it better. Coastal Construction is a champion of change. Here's a glimpse of my rigorous summer schedule: Weekdays 5 am - 2 am weekends 5 am - 11 pm (only studying, writing and taking extra courses on Coursera, EDx, Udemy & going to the gym). Weekdays: - 5:00 am: Wake up - 5:30 am: Depart for the internship - 6:00 - 6:45 am: Arrive either at the corporate office or the job site - 7:00 pm (or 3:30 pm on select days): Wrap up work. On some days, I'd leave early due to finals or presentations. - 8:00 pm or 5:00 pm: Reach home, factoring in the unpredictable Miami traffic. On days when the commute took longer, I'd productively spend the time listening to university lectures. - Post-arrival: Whenever possible, I'd immerse myself in the latest white papers or indulge in textbook reading—a personal hobby. - Until 10:00 pm: Dedicate time to my first master's degree from WGU. - Thursdays: Reserved for NASA L'Space lectures. - Until 1:00 am: Work on proposals. - Until 2:00 - 2:30 am: Wind down, prep for the upcoming day, and get some rest. Despite the intensity, this summer has been deeply fulfilling. Nornickel And The Specialists Of The Future We are committed to the sustainable development of the Arctic region, and with this purpose in mind, we involve undergraduates from various disciplines in our numerous projects: 🤖 The Professional Start Programme is targeted at future specialists who receive training at our facilities and subsequently write their theses on actual production operations.  Students from different cities are mastering their future profession under the guidance of mentors and are remunerated with a full-time wage. After the internship, each participant may sign a contract for targeted training, which guarantees employment with the company post-graduation. 🤖 The Conquerors of the North Programme offers prospective engineers the chance to learn how to set up business processes, generate ideas, and find unconventional solutions. It is an online education course for students majoring in engineering and technology. During the course, participants work on real business cases, join training sessions and quests. The culmination of this hard work is the final project presentation, with the opportunity to win awards. 🤖 The First Arctic Programme enables graduates and young professionals to reach their first managerial position in 2.5 years. Within this project, participants collaborate with various teams and learn how to manage challenging projects in a cross-functional environment. 7 percent more students have been accepted on a Danish maritime education confirming that the efforts and campaigns of Danish Shipping and maritime friends are effective and must be continued. Big high five to my colleagues working with maritime education and training. Nearly 1000 students in Denmark are starting their maritime dream education in a few weeks. As my colleague and Ececutive Director Anne Windfeldt Trolle says: "We need more Danish seafarers, including marine engineers, navigators, and shipping professionals. It is crucial for our industry to maintain our position as a strong maritime nation, so I am incredibly happy that maritime education is experiencing such significant progress." Danish Shipping has strengthened its efforts in targeted recruitment for the industry over the past year. This includes reviving the campaign "World Careers," producing the mini-documentary "Against the Current", and launching an attractive internship program called "Come Aboard" for inexperienced ship assistants.
