As the school year gets underway, we’ve seen an abundance of articles like this one by Eric Roston on the impacts of high indoor temperatures in classrooms. Across the country, INDOOR temperatures in schools are reaching up to 90°F, and over 40% of schools will need updated HVAC in the very near future. Energy management solutions are becoming more critical as a means of helping schools, especially rural schools with limited budgets, cut energy usage and costs. If you are a rural school interested in piloting CEL’s simple and affordable energy management platform, consider applying to be part of our Smart & Resilient Schools pilot! “I watched the weather for a week before school started, when I saw this heat wave coming. I was just filled with dread, because it's such a hard way to start school.” That’s Susan Eckert, a schoolteacher in Montclair, New Jersey. Her district is one of many nationwide dealing with extreme heat that’s canceling, shortening, or delaying classes. And it’s little wonder why. According to a recent State of Our Schools report, over 40% of U.S. public schools need new or updated HVAC systems. It’s clear: our schools need better infrastructure to keep students and staff safe and comfortable in a warming world. What’s the best way to do it? Electrifying. When it’s time to purchase a new A/C, choosing a heat pump instead is the way to go. A heat pump is more energy-efficient and cost-effective, and it can do the work of both a furnace and an A/C. It’s the all-around better choice, and it can play a key role in creating the healthier, more comfortable, climate-resilient spaces that children deserve. Ridership across Los Angeles Metro rail and bus services in September surged 10% compared to September 2022, reaching an average of nearly 1 million rides each weekday. Los Angeles-area students led the charge, with 1.6 million total boardings using LA Metro’s GoPass pilot program that offers free rides to K-12 and community college students. The monthly total marked a return to almost 80% of pre-pandemic levels.

This is one of the best discussions of the impact of declining enrollment on schools I've seen lately, and it does a good job of balancing the pros for student experience when schools are smaller with the fiscal realities of an enrollment-based funding system. But one factor often goes ignored in these discussions: as enrollment declines, we have more English learners and students with disabilities. Weighted student formulas should offset this, but does the math really math when you need a certain number of set positions to have a functioning school? Particularly when you need social workers, hard-to-staff teachers, and occupational therapists?
New story with Sara Randazzo: Many American school systems are struggling with the exact same problem: too many schools and not enough students. But closing schools is educationally and politically fraught. https://lnkd.in/exGeyFPt

For every five tradesmen who retire this year, only two will enter the workforce to replace them. It's an alarming statistic if you prefer your HVAC, plumbing, and electricity running smoothly. There's an incredible opportunity here. Check out this video for more information on the future of education in America. #tradeschool #education #workforce #vocationaleducation
