Is Your Next Construction Project a Climate Hero or Villain? The experts are practically shouting from the rooftops that we need to team up, pool our resources, and make some hard data-driven choices. A recent study, "Building Materials and the Climate: Constructing a New Future" by UN Environment Programme shows that we might be focusing on the wrong things when it comes to construction and climate change. The way forward lies not just in reducing "operational carbon," but in fundamentally changing how we approach construction. Here are three key ways: - Recycle: Prioritize the use of existing materials through reconstruction, refurbishment, or repurposing before considering new construction projects - Regenerate: Opt for materials that are not only sustainable but also locally sourced to reduce transportation emissions and support the local economy. - Decarbonize: Minimize the carbon footprint of traditional materials like concrete and steel, and explore designs that can be disassembled for future use. It's for this very reason that “place” is one of Liveable's 5Ps—considering the physical spaces we spend time in crucial for a holistic approach to the health of the people and the planet. And if we keep going at it alone or skimp on the funding, hitting that net-zero emissions goal in construction will just be pie in the sky. #sustainability #construction #liveablefutures

Sheppard Robson, and over 30 architectural practices are uniting for a greener future, challenging the UK's current Future Homes Standard. Together with sustainability leaders like Bioregional and the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC), we're advocating for critical revisions to ensure the new housing standards genuinely address climate change. The proposed standards fall short. We demand stronger measures: regulation of embodied carbon, better fabric standards, and mandatory solar panels. It's a pivotal moment to influence change; ensuring sustainable development is not just an aspiration but a reality.
A very important initiative in which we - alongside our industry peers - lobby for a definitive and ambitious Future Homes Standard to meet our climate commitments. https://lnkd.in/eEwNZZi2 Architects’ Journal #sustainability #residentialdesign

Sustainability Despair Architects stand at the forefront of shaping not just our buildings, but also our future. Their role goes beyond the realms of design & aesthetics; architects are pivotal in communicating a vision of the future that is both sustainable & resilient. This unique responsibility places them at the heart of our efforts to combat climate change. Every model, every structure they conceive, is an opportunity to integrate sustainable practices, promote energy efficiency and embrace eco-friendly materials. Architects don't just design spaces; they design solutions for a world grappling with environmental challenges. The value of architects in our quest for a sustainable future cannot be overstated. Their work is a constant reminder that every construction project is a chance to make a positive impact on the environment. By prioritizing green spaces, optimizing natural light and employing renewable energy sources, architects demonstrate that progress & sustainability can go hand in hand. They are not just building for today but are laying the foundations for a greener, more hopeful tomorrow. In a world facing unprecedented climate challenges, architects offer a beacon of hope, showing us that through innovation and thoughtful design, we can create a future that is not only habitable but thriving. https://loom.ly/21tOgZw #sustainability #architecture #design

The majority of architects are concerned about the climate crisis, but yet they find themselves struggling to become part of the solution. A recent Australian survey found that many architects are overwhelmed when it comes to sustainability practices. UK architects, do you have a similar experience? If so, we can assist you.
