Shanta Gold Limited topped production of 100,000 oz #gold produced in 2023 for the first time as its new mine at Singida in Tanzania continued its good start. Singida helped offset a moderate slowdown at New Luika, also in Tanzania, said Eric Zurrin, Shanta’s chief executive. For the current year, Shanta expects output to rise to between 100-106,000oz at all-in-sustaining costs of US$1,300- 1,350 per oz. Over the next four years, production is forecast to rise to an average of 169,00oz a year and the higher costs in 2024 reflect more exploration to achieve the target said the statement. Oriole Resources PLC continued its recent upward march as it restarted #exploration at the Mbe #gold project in Cameroon. Mbe is one of two of Oriole's projects in East Africa where gold producer BCM recently agreed to fund exploration in return for a sizeable equity stake. BCM can earn up to 50% for a US$1 million signature payment at Mbe plus U$4 million in exploration expenditure and resource-linked success payments. Through a similar deal, BCM can take a 50% stake in the Bibemi, another of Oriole's projects in Cameroon. #OrioleResources that sampling is now underway at Mbe to confirm its belief that a corridor of gold mineralisation runs across all of its licences in Cameroon. Guinea set to construct second alumina refinery

The Lobito Corridor project – a cross-border infrastructure development connecting Angola with mining operations in Zambia and the DRC, as well as global markets – is expected to be completed in 2029. Pleased to share our new Carnegie Africa policy outlook on "Maximizing the Benefits of the Renewed Global Interest in Africa’s Strategic Minerals". Written by Folashadé Soulé, PhD, it summarizes the insights shared by the government, private sector and civil society participants of the workshop we convened during the Investing in African Mining Indaba 2024 conference in Cape Town South Africa. A few highlights: - The workshop objectives were to share challenges and successes faced during the contract negotiation process for mining deals (including around "critical" minerals) and to consider how to maximize financial gains, create linkages to the domestic economy, build local supply chains, and comply with labor and environmental standards. - The workshop focused specifically on how African governments can best tackle the challenges and harness opportunities during the negotiation process—both from governments’ and investors’ perspectives. Several aspects of the process were covered: for instance, from the governments’ perspectives, how to prioritize policy frameworks and design a national strategy to define the “criticality” of minerals; and from the investors’ perspectives, how to better structure the negotiation process and ensure compliance with strict environment, social, and governance (ESG) standards. Lessons from the experience of other countries, especially Indonesia, were also shared. - Finally, the workshop covered the best ways African governments can bridge capacity gaps while dealing with investors and operating at the national and continental levels. Overall, the workshop allowed for candid discussions on how African countries can bolster their agency in the process and how key stakeholders can support the negotiation capacity of African governments. BATTERY AND CRITICAL MINERALS: Time for Africa to really cash in. The #Globalbatterymetals market size is calculated at USD 11.65 billion in 2024 and is expected to be worth around USD 23.97 billion by 2033 - The revenues from the extraction of just four key minerals: cobalt, nickel, lithium and copper are estimated to total $16 trillion over the next 25 years. Africa is already at the centre of global critical minerals production: ·       The #Democratic Republic of #Congo accounts for over 70 percent of the global cobalt output, approximately half the world’s reserves. ·       #SouthAfrica, #Gabon and #Ghana collectively account for over 60 percent of global manganese production. ·       #Zimbabwe has Africa's largest lithium reserves and the world's sixth-largest lithium producer and supplier. There are other African countries that have lithium resources, including #Namibia, #Mali, the Democratic Republic of Congo (#DRC) and Ghana. ·       Other African countries with significant critical mineral reserves include #Guinea, #Mozambique, and #Zambia.
