The Zambian Ministry of Transport & Logistics, in conjunction with the Zambia Development Agency and industry stakeholders, invites you to a live pre-event webinar on the Transporting of Minerals in Zambia, scheduled for March 13th, 2024, from 14:30 to 15:30. This session will explore key challenges and solutions related to transportation for mining products in the Tripartite Region #SADC, #EAC, and #COMESA. Resources including copper, cobalt, zinc, nickel, manganese, aluminium, etc., are in high demand due to their significant role in emerging technologies like electric cars, battery storage, and renewable energy. Investors, importers, exporters, and logisticians seek efficient cross-country corridors to move these critical elements from resource-rich countries like Zambia and the DRC to key outlets. Expect discussions on strategies to address the current challenges, given the high demand for mining products, including: ➡ How mines decide on the form of transportation for minerals. ➡ Rail or road? ➡ Security of the metal along the corridor. ➡ Regional ports & related transport logistics. Secure your spot by registering https://lnkd.in/duqzUfrk. SPEAKERS James Kaposa Walvis Bay Corridor Group Business Development Manager for Zambia. Willie R. Sweta Founding President of the Association of Zambia Mineral Exploration Companies (AZMEC). Mudiwa Mupfanochiya Business Development Officer at Cornelder de Moçambique, S.A. Chris Chipimo Zambia Chamber Of Mines Representative. This webinar is a teaser to the momentous transport and logistics conference and exhibition LANDLINKED ZAMBIA on 4th & 5th April 2024 in Lusaka-Zambia. Africa possesses a significant share of global mineral reserves – including 92% of platinum, 56% of cobalt, 54% of manganese and 36% of chromium. These minerals are used to produce green technologies such as electric vehicle (EV) batteries and wind turbines. Currently, minerals are largely exported from Africa in their raw states to be refined abroad. Increasing processing capacity within Africa to export intermediate goods or final products, known as value addition, could help drive economic development on the continent by creating jobs and resulting in higher tax and income revenues. African countries have huge energy, housing and transport needs and minerals could play a role in the sustainable development of these sectors. Minerals also present an opportunity for Africa to be a frontrunner in the global transition to renewable energy and to shift its position in global value chains. Several African countries have already adopted policies aimed at developing their mineral value chains, such as export restrictions on raw minerals. Regional initiatives have also been launched to try and increase the benefits of mining for African communities. To develop their mineral sectors, African countries need to attract investment, improve geological mapping and expand their skilled workforces. They also need to address challenges in their mining sectors such as infrastructure shortcomings and environmental and human rights issues. Since minerals such as copper and cobalt are key to manufacturing renewable energy technologies, rising demand for these minerals presents an opportunity for Africa to play a key role in the global transition to renewable energy, and to change its position in global value chains. Many African countries currently operate in the upstream segment, extracting minerals and exporting raw materials without substantial value addition .This perpetuates the continent’s position at the lower rungs of global value chains, constraining economic benefits and its ability to negotiate favourable trade terms. By engaging in processes that add value to mineral resources and increasing processing capacity within Africa, countries could export intermediate goods or final products and shift their positions in value chains to the midstream or downstream segments. This could create jobs in the processing sector as well as result in higher tax revenues and increased income from exports. According to McKinsey, Africa could generate between USD 200 million and USD 2 billion of additional annual revenue by 2030 and create up to 3.8 million jobs by building a competitive, low-carbon manufacturing sector. Additionally, minerals could play a role in meeting African citizens’ huge housing and transport needs by driving the sustainable development of these sectors.#africarising #Africa #mining #selfreliance.

Thrilled to be in Lusaka today for the advocacy workshop on Promoting Awareness of Sustainable Mineral Resource Management Governance in Zambia and its Alignment with the Africa Mining Vision (AMV), hosted by the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) with the European Union. Mining contributes about 72% of Zambia's export earnings and 44% of government revenues. More than that, Zambia is strategically positioned in a region rich in minerals, including green/critical minerals. If Africa is to benefit from its green minerals, countries cannot go it alone - regional value chains will be essential. That is why the agreement between Zambia and the DRC to collaborate in developing EV battery value chains is so interesting. The workshop opened with a timely reminder by interim AMDC Director Marit Y. Kitaw of the centrality of Africa's green minerals to the continent's development ambitions. Mtwalo Msoni has done an excellent job taking us through the findings of the report. Wonderful to see the African Mining Vision, African Mineral Governance Framework and other tools making a very tangible difference in how we are able to engage with the mineral governance and value addition debates at country and regional level. Later today, we'll be doing a 'soft launch' of the forthcoming African Green Minerals Observatory, an extremely exciting AMDC initiative we have been supporting. I'll be joined up front by Marit and the always-impressive Claude Kabemba. Big things happening - watch this space! #criticalminerals #africandevelopment #zambia

Country Presentation session: East African Community (EAC) Africa Battery Mineral Initiative on behalf of the EAC was created to promote Foreign Direct Investment to entire critical mineral supply chain, value addition of critical minerals and change perception of Africa’s mining industry. Having lived in Germany🇩🇪 in last 27 years, there’s negative perception of African mining industry due to issues around child labor, project execution risk thus having interventions to change this perception to attract investment from Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Stellantis (USA) as well as Mercedes-Benz AG, BMW Group as off takers of manufactured components in Europe. The super region is similar to EAC since significant amounts of critical mineral endowments are present. Africa Battery Initiative has collected a database of 2500 critical minerals concession owners to ease investment deployment. Saudi Arabia🇸🇦 is targeting becoming an EV manufacturer, establish 28Gw electric car battery plant where EAC can join hands with the green and battery initiative to increase kingdom’s non-oil GDP from 16 to 50% by 2030. Zanzibar is preparing the first east African battery minerals summit from 24th-25th April, 2024. Last year, the kingdom hosted the Saudi Arabia Africa summit with most African heads of states to identify several areas of cooperation including critical minerals. The kingdom has allocated $15b for investment in critical minerals thus in discussions with Public Investment Fund, Ma'aden which have a goal of setting up 28GW battery manufacturing plant. European Space Agency - ESA Agency was interested to collaborate with the region in areas of mineral mapping, quantification of minerals on the sidelines of COP28. Investors from the kingdom are interested in funding entire mineral value chains. Most companies in the mineral value chains are predominantly from China🇨🇳 however, Volkswagen, Benz, BMW have shown interest in Tanzania🇹🇿, Burundi🇧🇮 and EU has allocated $360b for investment in critical minerals in the region. Bureaucracy of dealing with each member state independently has been reduced through the EACs single window to ease the investment process. Tanzania is finishing up 2.5 GW of hydroelectricity, DRC with 3.5Gw of power, the inter regional connectivity of rail, electricity connecting Tanzania🇹🇿, Burundi🇧🇮 and DRC🇨🇩 will ease access to electricity, movement of people and goods. #fmf #fmf24
