ConocoPhillips to acquire Marathon Oil for $17 billion amid U.S. oil and gas consolidation wave
ConocoPhillips agreed to acquire Marathon Oil Corporation . in an all-stock deal valuing the company at about $17 billion, extending a major buying spree among the largest players in the U.S. oil and gas industry.
The move expands ConocoPhillips’ footprint in domestic shale fields from Texas to North Dakota and hands the company reserves as far afield as Equatorial Guinea. It adds to a wave of recent megadeals as producers seek new drilling sites on a bet that oil and gas demand will remain robust for years to come.
The acquisition agreement represents a 14.7% premium to the last closing share price for Marathon, the companies said in a statement Wednesday. The deal has an enterprise value of $22.5 billion.
ConocoPhillips joins the ranks of major drillers pursuing production growth via recent acquisitions. In October, ExxonMobil . accelerated the pace of Permian Basin consolidation with a $62 billion deal for Pioneer Natural Resources Company . That was followed later that month by Chevron Corp.’s agreement to buy Hess Corporation . for about $53 billion.
ConocoPhillips had already expanded in the Permian in recent years through a $13 billion takeover of Concho Resources Inc. and a $9.5 billion purchase of Shell Plc’s assets in the region.
The ConocoPhillips deal stands out in some ways from other recent takeovers reshaping the U.S. oil patch. While acquisitions by Exxon and others focused largely on lining up future drilling sites, ConocoPhillips’s play for Marathon is more about cutting costs in the aging Eagle Ford and Bakken shale basins, analysts from Citigroup said in a research note.
ConocoPhillips shares declined 2.3% when trading opened in New York. Marathon gained 11%.

Oil and Gas Investments in Norway Set for Record-High in 2024
Companies are expected to spend a record-high level of investment on oil and gas extraction and pipeline transportation in 2024 offshore Norway, thanks to higher expected spending on exploration and field developments, Statistics Norway said on Tuesday.
Investments in oil and gas extraction and pipeline transportation for 2024 are now estimated at $23.6 billion (247 billion Norwegian crowns), “which is historically the highest nominal estimate given since this statistic was created,” Norway’s statistics office said, commenting on a second-quarter survey of investment estimates.
The new estimate of a record-high investment is 1.3% higher than in the first-quarter survey from February, which showed expectations of $23.3 billion (244 billion crowns) in 2024 investments.
For 2025, investment will also be strong although not as strong as this year, due to fewer new developments in the next year, Statistics Norway said.
Total investments in oil and gas activity, including pipeline transportation, are estimated at $20.6 billion (216 billion crowns) in 2025, which is 5.2% higher than estimated in the previous quarter.

Shell cuts offshore wind unit to sharpen focus on oil and gas business
British energy giant Shell is poised to reduce its workforce in its offshore wind division as CEO Wael Sawan shifts the company's focus towards oil and gas.
The job cuts, mainly in Europe, are expected to commence within months.
A Shell spokesperson stated: “We are concentrating on select markets and segments to deliver the most value for our investors and customers.
“Shell is looking at how it can continue to compete for offshore wind projects in priority markets while maintaining our focus on performance, discipline and simplification.”
The company, which had invested significantly in offshore wind to capitalise on its marine oil and gas extraction expertise, is now prioritising shareholder returns.
This strategic pivot comes amidst rising costs in the renewable sector and Sawan's emphasis on business performance after becoming CEO.
In June 2023, he announced a target of £3bn cuts in structural costs by the end of 2025.
The impending layoffs in the offshore wind department are part of these cost-reduction measures, following earlier job cuts in the low-carbon solutions unit.
Shell's offshore wind team, primarily based in the Netherlands, now faces limitations on spending, leaving them with fewer projects than anticipated.

Increasing use of renewable energy in US yields billions of dollars of benefits
By increasing its use of renewable energy, the US has not only slashed its planet-warming emissions but also improved its air quality, yielding hundreds of billions of dollars of benefits, a new report has found.
The study, published in Cell Reports Sustainability on Wednesday and based on publicly available data, focuses on uptick of renewable energy in the US from 2019 to 2022.
“From 2019 through 2022, wind and solar generation increased by about 55%,” said Dev Millstein , a scientist at the Berkeley Lab . “By 2022, wind and solar provided roughly 14% of total electricity needs for the US.”
During that time period, by reducing the use of fossil fuel power plants, the nation’s use of wind and solar power cut its carbon dioxide emissions by 900m metric tons, the authors found. That’s the equivalent of taking 71m cars off the road every year.

France to the US: Leave the tiny nuclear reactors to us
The latest global atomic race is pitting two nuclear powerhouses against one another: France and the United States.
The European Union this week unveiled a new industrial alliance to kick-start the manufacturing of so-called small nuclear reactors — a product that barely exists but that proponents insist could revolutionize nuclear power.
For Europe, the idea is simple: Join forces to beat competitors like China and Russia in the race to develop these bitesize siblings of conventional atomic plants. The hope is that the miniature reactors could eventually be made on an automobile-style conveyor belt at a fraction of the cost and time that have historically burdened nuclear plants.
But for France, there’s a major problem with Europe’s plan: America’s involved.
“It’s a European alliance,” said French MEP Christophe Grudler MEP , who hails from the same party as French President Emmanuel Macron , so the EU must “make sure Americans don’t stick their noses in.”
Valerie Faudon , who heads France’s nuclear energy society agrees. “This is really a matter of European sovereignty,” she said.
Their distaste is rooted, at least partly, in the fact that the U.S. is a major competitor to Europe — and France especially — in the scramble to craft mini-nuclear reactors.

New energy storage tech 'poised to outcompete' lithium-ion batteries
Lithium-ion batteries are set to lose their leading market position in energy storage to newer technologies, some of which are already outcompeting them on price, according to a new BloombergNEF report.
The high energy density of lithium-ion batteries and their established supply chain have long cemented them – along with pumped hydro – as a market-leading energy storage technology.
The importance of energy storage in the energy transition has never been greater, with the G7 group of highly industrialised nations recently setting a target of hitting 1.5TW of energy storage globally by 2030, six times today’s levels.
Hitting that target is seen as necessary if another global target – tripling renewables capacity to 11TW by 2030 – is to be achieved, given the need to balance fluctuations in intermittent wind and solar power generation.
Long-duration energy storage (LDES), defined as being able to store energy for six hours or more, is "rapidly garnering interest worldwide as the day it will out-compete lithium-ion batteries in some markets approaches," said BNEF in its inaugural survey of costs in the sector.
