🌍News for a fairer future! The Heinrich Böll Foundation has just released a thought-provoking policy brief titled "Climate Justice and Equitable Futures." What Is Missing in IPCC AR6 Scenarios and How to Go Beyond 🔍This insightful paper delves into the scenarios and models from the IPCC's 6th Assessment Report. 💡 The report suggests alternative approaches to shape the 7th Assessment Report, paving the way for a just, sustainable future for everyone.
🔔 🔔 New briefing paper: Climate Justice and Equitable Futures: What’s missing in IPCC AR6 Scenarios and How to go Beyond by Tejal Kanitkar and Prof. Thiagarajan Jayaraman, published by Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung, in collaboration with Third World Network. https://lnkd.in/eWRi_PV9 In the context of accelerating climate breakdown, we need the IPCC to reassess its approach for the 7th Assessment cycle (AR7), particularly with regard to equity, modelling, and mitigation pathways. ✏️ Key messages: 🔹 IPCC AR6 models and scenario projections for 2050 lead to futures that perpetuate or aggravate the inequalities of today across all indicators (energy use, consumption of goods and serves, GDP etc) - e.g. global North countries are projected to use more fossil fuels per capita than the global South, even in 2050 🔹 Models and scenarios of AR6 project an unequal sharing of the mitigation burden and an unfair appropriation of the remaining carbon budget: the poorest regions of the world bear the highest near-term mitigation burden, while the global North continues to appropriate an unfair share of the remaining carbon budget 🔹 high levels of land-based carbon removals worsens food insecurity and the risk of hunger, and even by 2050, none of the scenarios meet the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals 🔹 alternative futures with more equal and just outcomes across the world are possible, and require significantly higher efforts from the global North 🔹 for the IPCC's Seventh Assessment Report (AR7), climate modelling must foreground equity and climate justice to ensure the well-being of all Read the full briefing here: https://lnkd.in/eWRi_PV9
