By combining IFC’s private sector expertise with the EU’s development vision, we create real impact on the ground. Together, we have been scaling up private investment in emerging markets through blended finance solutions and technical assistance, and with the help of innovative EU funding mechanisms such as EFSD+. To date, the European Commission has provided over $538 million to IFC blended finance initiatives. It was a privilege to speak today with the European Parliament and colleagues from across the sector, alongside the ECDPM 🌍 on a topic that’s more urgent than ever—how we can make aid more effective and drive sustainable impact in fragile and conflict-affected situations. Thank you Barry Andrews MEP, The World Bank Group Ed Mountfield, Andrew McDowell and Laure Blanchard-Brunac for the insights. Today, over half of the world’s extreme poor live in fragile and conflict-affected environments. It’s clear that we need to rethink our approach. The private sector plays a huge role—creating 80% of jobs in fragile countries—but investment is often held back due to risk and challenges on the ground. At IFC - International Finance Corporation we’ve seen how financial tools like the European Fund for Sustainable Development Plus (EFSD+) can unlock capital for high-risk markets, encourage private sector involvement, and create an environment where businesses can thrive, advancing #GlobalGateway’s goals. For example, the European Commission guarantees for IFC investments in Ukraine shows how these instruments can bring about real change even in tough conditions. Moving forward, it’s all about: ✅ Creating investable opportunities through early engagement and tailored support ✅ Ensuring a strong local presence with on-the-ground resources to uphold our “do no harm” commitment ✅ Leveraging blended finance to mitigate risks and attract long-term investment ✅ Strengthening the domestic private sector to drive job creation, build skills, and expand financial inclusion ✅ Collaborating with MDBs/DFIs, governments, and civil society to maximize impact. While there are challenges, there’s so much potential to turn fragility into resilience and transform crisis into opportunity. I look forward to continuing this conversation and working together with our European partners to make it happen. Thanks to everyone who joined today’s discussion to push this agenda forward!

  • In #Azerbaijan, agriculture employs 37% of the population and contributes only 5.5% to GDP. Why?   Limited access to finance remains a major challenge, as farmers often lack collateral to obtain loans from financial institutions.   To bridge this gap, IFC - International Finance Corporation in partnership with SECO Economic Cooperation and Development , launched the Crop and Warehouse Receipts Project—a four-year initiative to enhance pre- and post-harvest financing. These innovative financial tools allow farmers to use crops as collateral, helping them secure loans for their businesses.  By improving regulations, digitizing processes, and promoting financial inclusion, we aim to help create a more resilient and productive agricultural sector.   📢 Stay tuned for updates on how we’re transforming agri-finance!   #AgriFinance #FoodSecurity
