Thanks to Alycia Gilde for hosting John Bressler and I yesterday in the White House Climate Policy Office! We had a great meeting discussing port infrastructure and sustainable freight transportation.

I have learned a lot about the maritime industry and policy since the start of my internship with American Association of Port Authorities! I am excited to highlight some of my work with the POWERS Program that highlights several U.S. ports' utilization of the Reduction of Truck Emissions at Port Facilities grant program. ICYMI: U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Buttigieg recently visited Port of Long Beach to mark the start of a $1.5B Railyard Expansion funded by the Mega Grant Program. We're grateful to see this major investment in our nation's port infrastructure progress come to fruition over the coming years. (ttnews.com)

Ship to shore crane tariffs are simply a tax on port development. The media has understood this point so clearly. Hopefully the US Trade Representative reverses course. What an honor to be quoted in Politico this week! "However, China so dominates the global ship-to-shore crane industry that the rest of the world likely does not have enough production capacity to meet anticipated demand, said Ian Gansler, director of government relations at the American Association of Port Authorities. Even if some company does decide to build ship-to-shore cranes in the United States, it will take several years for them to get up and running and to be able to make the same quality of equipment that China makes, he added. The AAPA hasn’t heard anything definitive from the administration since it raised its complaints, but officials say they are cautiously optimistic of receiving some relief, such as a delay in the effective date of the tariffs or exempting cranes already ordered." https://lnkd.in/efkfVg7i
