Data centers: From extractivism to insertivism. The global demand for data centers is undeniable, but so are strong opinions. When developments compete with communities for resources—water, power, land—the conversation shifts from opportunity to extraction. And when that happens, the industry loses. We’ve seen this play out in the Netherlands, Ireland and Singapore, where moratoriums have been introduced to curb their exponential growth. This was followed by stricter conditions. The challenge is clear: in an era of climate concerns, net zero commitments and ESG scrutiny, data centers must prove their value beyond their own operational needs. Data centers are now designated as critical national infrastructure but public sentiment still matters. Where there’s resistance, developments will move elsewhere. Without a clear community dividend, a project risks becoming untenable. “The thing we really need to focus on is to make things local. If you want people to feel okay about data centers they need to generate a material community dividend.” — Emma Fryer, Director of Public Policy, Europe, CyrusOne Cosentini Associates | Glumac | Hoare Lea | NDY | Tetra Tech

The unstoppable rise of data centers. Data centers are the backbone of our digital economy, and demand is soaring. In the UK—where this research was carried out—they’re growing at 20% year-on-year, up to 20 times faster than the wider UK economy. In the past year alone, £25 billion has been committed to new UK data center developments, with their construction and operation projected to add £44 billion to the economy over the next decade. The global AI boom is fueling this expansion, and the UK government is taking notice—placing data centers at the core of its AI Growth Zones strategy, fast-tracking planning to accelerate economic growth. Meanwhile, new global connectivity projects like 2Africa, Amitie and BT North Sea will create even more opportunities for fresh data center hubs. As data centers scale, their impact—economically and socially—will only grow. How can we ensure they deliver long-term value for both investors and communities? Bridging the gap: Data centers and the communities they serve. Right now, there’s a disconnect between what communities need from data centers and what’s being delivered. Too often, data centers are imposed on local areas rather than developed with them. The societal and economic value of data centers remains largely unrealized—by communities, planners and policymakers. The public see the results of creating data, like when they post on Instagram, but not the physical infrastructure storing their data. And, because no clear vision exists for what a socially-conscious data center should look like, meaningful engagement has been limited. Until now. As data centers grow in importance, so too must their role in environmental, social and governance. It’s time to build a roadmap for better integration. What does a truly community-conscious data center look like? Cosentini Associates | Glumac | Hoare Lea | NDY | Tetra Tech

Bringing data centers closer to communities. Big infrastructure can feel distant, designed for function, not people. But as #DataCenters expand to meet our ever-growing digital demands, their role in local communities is becoming more important. In their latest report, our colleagues at Hoare Lea spoke to key industry players to explore how data centers can be better integrated into the communities where they’re located. How might they contribute beyond their core purpose? This is the first of 8 posts exploring our research findings and what the future of data centers might look like. "What we've done in the past is not going to fit for the future." We were honored to recently host Craig Pennington of Oracle for a discussion on variable electrical load challenges in AI data centers. In this video Craig discusses the need for us to think differently as we try to solve the new challenges in data center design, including how to solve the potential for load spikes from 100 MW to 30MW, periodically, forever. It's why we've been focused very heavily on liquid cooling and submersion cooling solutions. You can watch the full discussion with Craig and our Mission Critical team from across Tetra Tech, Glumac, Cosentini Associates, NDY, Hoare Lea and RPS here: https://lnkd.in/euig7dsv
