I have been a registered social worker (RSW) in Nova Scotia since 2022 after immigrating from Los Angeles, California where I practiced as a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW). Prior to HRM, I had been working with formerly unhoused veterans and their families in the Greater Los Angeles community through the US Veterans' Healthcare Administration for ten years. I currently work with adults and older adults (18+), veterans, military, and first responders. Those in the LGBTQ+, multicultural, and polyamorous/ENM communities. As well as many others struggling with mental health challenges.

I am passionate about helping my clients develop a heathier self-relationship. Throughout our lives we can accumulate shame and fear, and dismiss emotions and experiences that are challenging to look at. This dismissal of the self can cause inner turmoil, emotional dysregulation, and may keep us feeling stuck in old patterns. I create a safe space for my clients to sit with and process their emotional experiences so that they may live more wholeheartedly, show up for themselves, and show up more fully in their relationships.

My ideal client is at the bottom of their “to do” list. They are overworked and pushing themselves beyond capacity. They are likely suffering from symptoms of burnout, stress, anxiety and/or depression. These clients often struggle to understand their own needs because they have neglected themselves, and their mental health for far too long.

Feeling stuck? Have you noticed a decline in your mood? Are negative thoughts (the "what ifs") becoming more difficult to ignore? Are you struggling with managing a difficult relationship and setting boundaries? Maybe you feel that being a new parent is not what you expected? Are you anticipating to, or going through a period of uncertainty or a life transition? Life is too short to surrender to overwhelming thoughts and feelings. With over a decade of experience in the mental health field, I can appreciate the need for time and a safe space to process, problem solve and learn strategies and skills to help you become your best self.

Hi there, I'm Tanya. I enjoy supporting youth to Millennials who are facing stress, anxiety, depression and ADHD, amongst a variety of other emotional difficulties. Life has been difficult, especially throughout these unprecedented times, and can result in troubles with worrying, focus and attention, low self-esteem, feelings of isolation, relationship issues, and overwhelming negative thoughts. It's not easy. The good news is that despite these difficulties, counselling can help turn the tide around; it offers a safe space to gain new insights, coping skills, and confidence to overcome challenges and start feeling better.

I believe that everyone has inner wisdom which can lead them towards healing. Can I help you learn to trust yourself enough to make space for your pain, shame, grief, sadness, joy, and love to be felt and explored? By being curious about your resistance to feeling, we can process and digest it. I am trained as a somatic, relational, and trauma therapist, and I can help you understand the unique ways you learned to resist or avoid parts of yourself as a way of protection. I believe that human connection is an essential part of the healing process and I prioritize my role as a human first and as a therapist second.

My clients arrive at therapy knowing something needs to change. Sometimes they know exactly what that is, and sometimes they don’t. They all know they just don’t want to keep experiencing life as it is now and they know they need help getting to a place where they are thriving rather than just surviving. Those challenges could include addiction, dealing with a loved one's addiction, anxiety, depression, life transitions (children, divorce, illness), relationship issues, grief & loss, and/or childhood trauma. I will use evidence-based treatments tailored to meet your unique needs. These include CBT, DBT ACT, Solution Focused and MI.

I connect with those navigating mental health (namely anxiety, panic attacks, autism meltdowns), neurodivergent folks, and perinatal maternal health. You may be journeying life not feeling "on" or like yourself. Have low capacity impacting your ability to function. Not feeling well rested or grounded. Debilitating headaches, brain fog, confusion, nausea, distraction… when one or more of these states take over, you can feel on edge, helpless, frustrated, disempowered, and hopeless. Through these moments of change and transition I believe in ease and abundance ahead for us. I would be honoured to hold space for you and your story.

Have you been to therapy before and not had the results you were hoping for? You may have insight into some areas of your troubles, but that insight alone hasn’t been enough. I offer therapy that focuses on internal emotional processes, not how you can change your thinking, but how something can feel different in the moment. Therapy will feel like a corrective emotional experience, where we can work together to notice how your unconscious processes are shaping your experiences in the here and now. I will help you experience emotions safely, regulate your anxiety, and turn against your ways of coping that are keeping you stuck.

I enjoy working with couples and individuals to address relationships issues, explore what is happening and to find a way forward. Often there are multiple issues going on at once and I can assist clients in prioritizing goals and identifying preferred ways of being in all areas of their lives. We can get caught up in "the problem story of self" and can't see all the other storylines we are living. I enjoy assisting clients in recognizing the other "stories of self" and finding ways to enhance these in their day to day lives. Most clients want to feel well, at peace, and experience love and joy.

When we are experiencing a stressful life event, a challenging medical diagnosis or chronic condition, or just facing a difficult period of our life, it is not uncommon that we may feel overwhelmed with new changes, unsettled thoughts and emotions, and need someone to talk to. Both individuals and caregivers may feel stressed and uncertain about the future. As we encounter life's difficulties, we all may need help coping at some point in our life. I am committed to helping my clients ease their distress, and find a healthy sense of well-being and more helpful and bonding connections in their relationships.

I hold space for your healing and growth and also for your unique values, beliefs, and lived experience. In addition to individual therapy, I also offer couples counseling, where we work to understand negative patterns that keep you in conflict, and begin to create new patterns of connection, safety, and trust.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
