It can be daunting figuring out where to begin when finding a counselor or even if you need a counselor. Whether you are going through day-to-day challenges, or you just feel off, we all need a safe space from time to time to explore and gain perspective on what we are experiencing. I seek to provide my clients a safe space to be human, with all the fears, imperfections and struggles that come with that. I help clients through life changes, and I help clients understand life experiences impact our identities and core beliefs.

Based in Canada, seeing client in Hong Kong! I work with clients who are looking for scientific evidence-based practice and warm caring connection. I believe that change starts with the relationship that we form in the therapy and then continues by building useful skills in and outside of our sessions. In practice this means that I fit best with clients who are interested in (1) understanding more about their thoughts and emotions while also (2) taking clear steps to improve their mental and physical well-being. My job as the therapist is to provide a warm and caring environment to support the client in this process.

Neuroscience has attested to the truth that we are hard-wired to connect, yet many people feel disconnected from others in contemporary world. Many suffer from alienation from themselves, fearfully not knowing what to make of the surge of unconscious impulses/feelings/fantasies. Psychotherapy is to redo these alienations, to bring wholeness to oneself and to one’s relationship, and to enhance more satisfaction in love and work. Seeing my clients boldly and lovingly embrace their true self and feelings with compassionate understanding brings me greatest joy.

I seek to support clients who are looking to make positive change in their lives. They may want to move away from difficult emotional states like depression, anxiety, anger and loneliness or address repetitive and destructive behaviours such as substance abuse or sexual compulsion that are holding them back. They may also be overwhelmed by big transitions like bereavement, divorce or relocation and feel stuck, or unvalued, in their professional journey. I see clients of all ages and from many walks of life, with a particular focus on men's mental health, adolescents and young adults, and members of the LGBTQ community.

Mid-Levels, Hong Kong
Broken Heart Therapy is for anyone experiencing loss or sadness, including relationship breakdown, identity crisis, children leaving home, job loss, pet death, loss of self, loneliness, or bereavement. Sometimes when we’re stuck in loss or grief, words are not enough. Unexpressed emotions are pent up inside us as we hide our feelings to protect ourselves or others. This can lead to ill physical and mental health and put strain on relationships. Broken Heart therapy honors your pain, allowing you to express and acknowledge it in a way that feels right to you, using life-affirming processes of arts, music, movement and writing.

I'm a trauma-informed therapist using a relational approach to help client transform unhelpful patterns, live more freely and fully, find lasting joy, and build satisfying relationships. In you I see a unique and complex person with your individualised temperaments, feelings, relational patterns, and unmet needs. In therapy, we dissect your distress from a compassionate angle and fathom how the past is affecting our present difficulties. Positive changes follow as we get to express what was repressed, clear blockages, hence expand the freedom to make self-directed choices in life. I'm trilingual and speak English/Cantonese/Mandarin.

I work with people who are feeling the effects of adversity such as stress, transitions, loss, or trauma. The type of adversity my clients have been through is often complex and multilayered. It is not necessarily a single event that is causing distress, but a series of past or ongoing events. Humans are brilliant at adapting through adversity, and over time, these adaptations can become practiced patterns. When the patterns outlive their usefulness, however, they can become a source of anxiety, overwhelm, or distress.

Jacquelyn works with adult clients and adolescents, specializing in trauma healing, relationships and attachment, self-esteem, anxiety and depression. She believes that much of what keeps individuals disconnected from others and themselves is driven by unconscious patterns developed as coping mechanisms in response to trauma and emotional suppression. By deepening awareness about why people do what they do, her therapeutic process aims to help individuals identify these patterns, find emotional release, and realize choice, which can yield greater connection, and acceptance within and with others.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counselling

How can I find a therapist in Hong Kong?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counsellors are all licensed mental health professionals. In many countries, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counsellor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counsellors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counsellor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counselling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
