UNICEF is a leading advocate for children. With a strong presence in SA, we work to improve the life of every child.

About us

With a strong presence in South Africa, UNICEF is a leading advocate for children. We have the global authority to influence decision-makers and the variety of partners at the grassroots level to turn the most innovative ideas into reality. We believe that nurturing and caring for children are the cornerstones of human progress. UNICEF was created with this purpose in mind - to work with others to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child's path. UNICEF upholds the Convention of the Rights of the Child. We work to assure equality for those who are discriminated against, girls and women in particular. We work for the Millennium Development Goals and for the progress promised in the United Nations Charter. We strive for peace and security, and work to hold everyone accountable to the promises made for children.

BLOG: "As we reflected on our experience, we realized that #MandelaDay is not just about giving back for 67 minutes, but about making a lasting impact. Our visit to Kotulong reminded us that every child deserves love, care, and protection," writes UNICEF South Africa Campus Club volunteer, Boitumelo Moile. Boitumelo and other volunteers from the North West University Vaal campus spent #MandelaDay with children at the Kotulong Community Centre.

As the #ClimateChangeBill notes, children are among those most vulnerable to the impacts of #ClimateChange. UNICEF South Africa welcomes the Bill's signing, which is an important step in outlining the country's climate change response, mitigation, and adaptation actions. Together with partners, including government, UNICEF continues to work with children and young people to empower them to be champions for climate and environmental action through climate education, green skills, and advocacy. This includes working, as part of the UN in South Africa, to drive forward the country’s Just Energy Transition with children and young people’s specific issues at the forefront to ensure a healthier and more sustainable environment for every child – for everyone. #ForEveryChild, #ClimateAction

#Cyberbullying starts or ends with you! 1/3 of children in South Africa are at risk of online violence, exploitation and abuse. What happens online can have a real impact on people's lives. For Brenda, being bullied in a WhatsApp group by her peers not only affected her mental health but stopped her from attending her Matric Dance. Cyberbullying doesn't only hurt the feelings of many children and young people, it can disrupt their education too. We must protect each other online. Stand up for a friend and to call out bullying. If you're affected by cyberbullying call Childline on 116 for help. #OnMyMind #ForEveryChild, protection #SafeOnline

Parents are central to young children's early learning, development, growth and health from birth. To support parents, UNICEF has been working with the government of South Africa for more than 17 years in implementing the National Parental/Primary Caregiver Capacity-Building Training Programme across the country. This programme is aimed at parents of children aged 0 to 5 and provides important information about #LearningThroughPlay, child development, health and nutrition and #PositiveParenting. Recently, UNICEF South Africa Education Officer Lungile Mdluli joined the Department of Basic Education to co-facilitate a Capacity-Building workshop in Johannesburg over five days.

"Nkosi, Sikelela i-Afrika." UNICEF echoes the message of hope from President Cyril Ramaphosa and looks forward to continuing our work with government and partners towards a better life #ForEveryChild in South Africa.

Yesterday at South Africa's Parliament, and auspiciously on Nelson #MandelaDay, the President of South Africa delivered #OPA2024. Checked against our 2023 #Manifesto4EveryChild in South Africa, UNICEF South Africa sees many reasons to look forward to our collaboration with the "Cooperation Nation" and to join the army of "social weaver birds". It's no longer an "Indlulamithi 2035" scenario, but a promising reality. My immediate takeaways of entry points for strengthening the UNICEF Programme of Cooperation with the Government, people and children in SA are: -An effective, integrated and comprehensive poverty alleviation strategy is necessary to provide protection and support to the most vulnerable in society. -We will focus on achieving universal access to early childhood development, which is a prerequisite for improved learning in later years. -We will ensure schools are conducive to education, with enough classrooms, safe and appropriate sanitation facilities, clean water and a daily meal for those who need it. -To ensure that we produce the skills that our economy needs, we will expand vocational and technical training in schools and post-school institutions, and take a demand-led approach to skills development. -As we implement the National Health Insurance, we will focus on strengthening healthcare infrastructure, improving training of healthcare personnel and using technology to improve healthcare management. -We will continue to implement the National Strategic Plan on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Femicide and expand victim support services, like the Thuthuzela Centres and GBV desks in police stations. UNICEF pledges to continue to support children in having their voices heard and agency recognized in the forthcoming National Dialogue to discuss the critical challenges facing [the] nation and to agree on what is needed to achieve a better future for this great country. #ForEveryChild, an army of "Social Weaver Birds" and a "Cooperation Nation"!

Developing and upgrading robotics and coding resources for learners in South Africa is critical to equipping young people with the relevant skills needed for their working lives. On 1 August, the Mail & Guardian, in partnership with UNICEF South Africa and BMW South Africa, will host a Critical Thinking Forum where we will unpack STEM education, and robotics and coding innovations in educational institutions.
