A U.S. Government-Led Partnership
About us
A U.S. government-led partnership, Power Africa harnesses the collective resources of public and private sectors to double access to electricity in sub-Saharan Africa. Power Africa’s goal is to add at least 30,000 megawatts (MW) of cleaner and more reliable electricity generation capacity and 60 million connections by 2030. Since 2013, Power Africa has delivered new or improved electricity to more than 200 million people across sub-Saharan Africa and connected nearly 42 million homes and businesses to on- and off-grid energy solutions. Through Power Africa assistance, 152 power projects reached financial close, representing nearly 14,300 megawatts (MW). Of these, 104 are now online and generating nearly 8,000 MW of cleaner and more reliable electricity, helping to mitigate climate change and end energy poverty on the continent. THROWBACK THURSDAY | What an amazing week in Nigeria! On his first visit to Nigeria, Power Africa Coordinator Richard Nelson and our team, Samson Masebinu, PhD, Brook Adam and Brian David-West, met with a host of stakeholders across the power sector value chain to identify areas of collaboration and continuous coordination to help Nigeria reach its electrification goals. They had the chance to meet with some of Power Africa's largest development partners, understand top priorities from federal agencies including the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Rural Electrification Agency of Nigeria, and Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and hear from burgeoning investors entering Nigeria’s ripe commercial landscape. They also sat down with Olu Arowolo Verheijen, Special Adviser to the Nigerian President on Energy, and Biodun Ogunleye, Honorable Commissioner, Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, to discuss top power priorities of the current administration. And explored strategies to reduce technical and commercial losses with Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc and Ikeja Electric,. The week included exciting visits to the Apo substation in Abuja with FGN Power Company and Egbin Power PLC in Lagos, the largest power-generating station in Nigeria. Through forums like the off-grid developers and investors roundtables as well as our career fair and fire side chat co-hosted with The Electricity Hub, they interacted with the organizations and individuals doing remarkable and inspiring work in Nigeria. Thank you to everyone involved with this successful trip and we look forward to continuing our work in Nigeria! #Nigeria #Abuja #Lagos #EnergyAccess #FieldTrip #PowerAfrica Amarachi Obinna-Nnadi Natalie Reed
