A U.S. Government-Led Partnership
About us
A U.S. government-led partnership, Power Africa harnesses the collective resources of public and private sectors to double access to electricity in sub-Saharan Africa. Power Africa’s goal is to add at least 30,000 megawatts (MW) of cleaner and more reliable electricity generation capacity and 60 million connections by 2030. Since 2013, Power Africa has delivered new or improved electricity to more than 200 million people across sub-Saharan Africa and connected nearly 42 million homes and businesses to on- and off-grid energy solutions. Through Power Africa assistance, 152 power projects reached financial close, representing nearly 14,300 megawatts (MW). Of these, 104 are now online and generating nearly 8,000 MW of cleaner and more reliable electricity, helping to mitigate climate change and end energy poverty on the continent. Updates from Madagascar 🇲🇬 📷 1: Hosted on the beautiful Red Island, the United States government celebrated Africa50 Infrastructure Investment Platform’s objective of boosting infrastructure investment on the continent at their 2024 General Shareholders Meeting. On the sidelines of the meeting, the U.S. Ambassador to Madagascar, Claire Pierangelo, presided over the signing of a $1.87 million grant agreement between the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation and Africa50 to support feasibility studies for the pioneering, run-of-river 120 MW Upper Volobe Hydropower Plant project, managed by the Compagnie Générale Hydroélectrique de Volobe. This project supports the Government of Madagascar's target of reaching 75% renewable energy sources by 2030. Delighted to share that U.S. Ambassador to Burundi, Lisa Peterson, yesterday announced over $5 million to support expanding electricity access in Burundi, particularly in underserved rural communities. Power Africa, in collaboration with the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation and the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), is supporting Weza Power, a private Burundian utility, through joint technical assistance and grant funding. This public-private partnership aims to help Weza Power achieve its mission of increasing electricity access to 70% of the population. Currently, only 11% of the population has electricity, dropping to less than 2% in rural areas. Expanding the electric grid plays a vital role in Burundi’s sustainable future, creating local jobs, stimulating economic growth, and ensuring energy reaches schools and hospitals. On this International Day of Rural Women, we celebrate the theme “Rural Women Cultivating Good Food for All,” recognizing the critical role women play in global food systems. In this photo, Forma Kollie, a farmer in Liberia, uses a solar dryer to dry cassava, demonstrating how innovative practices can enhance food production and preservation. Women like her not only feed their families but also contribute to their communities, even in the face of gender inequality and limited resources. Access to energy plays a crucial role in ensuring food security. In sub-Saharan Africa, especially in rural areas, the limited access to electricity hampers food production, processing, and storage. By supporting private sector initiatives to expand off-grid energy solutions, Power Africa empowers rural women to harness new energy access, improving productivity and resilience in food systems. Let's celebrate and support rural women, who are vital to nurturing their families and driving sustainable change in their communities! #InternationalDayOfRuralWomen #EnergyAccess #PowerAfrica #EmpowerWomen #Liberia #Cassava #FoodSecurity #RuralDevelopment
