  • Our September edition of The Journey shares highlights from our automotive and mining webinars. The webinars focused on the key findings from our 2024 Workforce Plan: Moving Ahead Together with insights and Q&As from our CEO and panel members. We are thrilled to announce the national release of training resources for RII21222 - Certificate II in Autonomous Workplace Operations. These resources have been developed to support the delivery of Autonomous Workplace Operations training in various industry areas. Thank you to our Automotive SWAP member, Matthew Tosolini from Komatsu Australia for sharing insights into how changing the terminology from 'mechanic' to 'technician' affected their apprenticeship intake. • The Oil and Gas Extraction industry is a significant economic contributor to Australia. The sector was valued at $130 billion in 2023, with gas accounting for 87% of this value. The industry has grown from primarily serving domestic demand to becoming the world's second-largest exporter of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). The industry is vertically integrated and encompasses: 👉 Exploration, 👉 Extraction, 👉 Refining, 👉 Transportation. Based on our research, the data shows a decline in the workforce since 2018. Skills shortages are prevalent, with many required occupations overlapping the broader mining industry. A significant portion (47%) of the workforce requires at least a bachelor's degree, reflecting the specialised skills needed. • We submitted the responses to the Australian Bureau of Statistics round 4 of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) consultation. Our submission includes feedback from industry to propose and endorse various changes to automotive occupations. As a JSC, we primarily use ANZSCO to develop our Workforce Plan. We analyse ANZSCO's unit group and occupation levels, along with employment and occupation data, to differentiate between occupations, as some may not be specific to one industry or may fall within larger, non-exclusive unit groups. In our submission and Workforce Plan 2024, we highlighted that switching to electrification is both a challenge and an opportunity for the industry, which should be reflected. It affects both ABS workforce data and NCVER apprenticeship data, which rely on ANZSCO's structure. • The Australian government aims to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, with goals such as generating 82% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and supporting electric vehicle (EV) adoption by installing charging stations every 150km on major highways. To achieve this, more renewable energy sources like rooftop solar panels, EV chargers, and small-scale solar and wind farms will need to connect to the electricity grid. However, connecting these new energy resources to the grid may be too slow, creating a barrier to meeting these goals. The growing number of energy connections, especially those wanting to send power back to the grid, presents challenges for electricity distribution companies. The government is proposing improvements that can be made by requiring electricity distribution companies to follow specific rules (regulations) or offering financial rewards or penalties to encourage better performance (incentives). This paper provides 5 recommendations for streamlining the connection process and outlines whether they would be best implemented through a regulatory or incentive approach. • Establish baseline CER connection data • Require DNSPs to make it easy for proponents to access information about available capacity at prospective sites • Incentivise DNSPs to connect and energise EVSE and Large CER faster • Require DNSPs to provide clear requirements for the provision of a second connection • An alternative regulatory incentive approach specifically for EVSE projects Please provide feedback on the options presented via the https://buff.ly/3TnN8Fs website before Sunday, 22 September 2024. • The automotive repair and maintenance sector is a crucial part of Australia's automotive industry, employing 158,500 workers across various specialties such as auto electrics, mechanical servicing, and body repairs. The number of service and repair workshops has increased by 11.5% since 2021, which is indicative of the growing vehicle numbers and demand for maintenance services. The sector is involved in identifying future requirements for servicing EVs, including the role of licensing for EV technicians. There is also a focus on recycling and end-of-life management for EV batteries, highlighting the need for new skills and training. • The #AUSMASA team was delighted to visit the new Electric Automotive Vehicle Training Centre North Metropolitan TAFE's Joondalup campus. The training centre will offer skill set courses in battery and hybrid electric vehicles to help automotive professionals upskill in inspecting, diagnosing, and servicing clean energy vehicles. Our Executive Director of Training Products and Implementation, Helen Tinney, facilitated an engaging expert panel with Steve Atkinson, Main Roads Western Australia; Stephen Moir, Motor Trade Association (MTA); and Ray Robinson, North Metropolitan TAFE. We would like to thank Michelle Hoad, and Kristin Wareing for organising the session. The Electric Automotive Vehicle Training Centre is part of the State Government's record $250 million investment in new and upgraded infrastructure at WA TAFE colleges. This investment positions North Metropolitan TAFE at the forefront of electric vehicle technology training. It is critical to the broader efforts to build the skilled workforce needed for WA's clean energy transition. AUSMASA team members in attendance Helen Tinney, Caroline Winter, David Hynes, Janet Simmons and Kristian Rough. • Ask R U OK? Any Day of the year because a conversation could change a life. At AUSMASA, we understand the importance of mental health and well-being in the workplace. Simply asking someone how they are doing can make a significant difference. Here are some tips to help initiate and navigate meaningful conversations on R U OK? Any Day: • Choose the right setting: Find a private, comfortable space where the person feels safe. Choose a time when neither of you are rushed or stressed. • Approach with empathy: Be genuine in your concern and ask open-ended questions like, "How have you been feeling?" to encourage sharing. • Listen actively: Give your full attention by eliminating distractions and acknowledging their feelings. • Be supportive, not judgmental: Avoid offering advice unless asked. Validate their feelings without trying to "fix" them. • Offer practical support: Ask how you can help and encourage seeking professional assistance if appropriate. • Follow up: Check in regularly to show ongoing care and support. • Take care of yourself: Recognise your limits and seek support when needed. • Be prepared for different responses: Respect if they are not ready to talk and manage your emotions by reaching out for help if necessary. These steps can help build trust and foster a supportive environment for meaningful open conversations. Join the virtual event hosted by R U OK? and tune in live at 12 pm (AEST) on 12 September 2024.
