Parramatta Aquatic Centre by #Grimshaw and #AndrewBurgesArchitects with #McGregorCoxall has won the Walter Burley Griffin Award for Urban Design in the 2024 National Architecture Awards. The design effortlessly integrates a large program of pools, a gym, a cafe, change rooms and multipurpose rooms hidden in plain sight with sensitive layering of built and landscaped form. The seamless integration of landscape provides a protected sanctuary for pool users, while the partial burying of the centre gives a restored ecosystem back to the surrounding neighbourhood.

The 2nd City Building Seminar for 2025 hosted by City of Gold Coast will feature Adrian McGregor of internationally awarded landscape architecture and bio urbanism firm McGregor Coxall at HOTA, Home of the Arts on Thursday 27 March at 12.30pm. Adrian will discuss how an interconnected systems approach can improve urban resilience and prosperity. Biourbanism presents a shift in urban thinking, reframing cities as human-modified forms of nature. Adrian McGregor is the author of the book Biourbanism - which will be available at the event. We're thrilled to share that our talented Brisbane team member Sophie Richards has been awarded the prestigious AILA 2024 Karl Langer Award and the QUT University Medal. First presented in 1972, the Karl Langer Award represents the highest honor bestowed by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) to a landscape architecture graduate. Sophie's unique approach to landscape architecture, combining environmental science with a deep commitment to social justice, exemplifies the innovative thinking we value at McGregor Coxall. As noted by the AILA jury panel, her work pushes beyond conventional sustainability and livability targets, exploring new frontiers in urban environmental design. The jury particularly commended Sophie's diverse perspective, depth of research, and dedication to integrating socio-cultural justice with ecological systems thinking. These qualities not only earned her these prestigious recognitions but also make her an invaluable member of our team. We were thrilled to be shortlisted and invited to interview for the recent Regent Street, Haymarket, and Piccadilly Circus Public Realm Competition. We were delighted to partner with Schulze+Grassov on the proposal for this inspiring project that will reshape the heart of London's West End. We would also like to thank our fellow team members, including Arup, Contemporary Art Society, Maynard Design Consultancy, and Jayne Earnscliffe, with whom we formed a great synergy and look forward to collaborating with again in the future. The team drew on their detailed knowledge of the area from previous projects, envisioning a bold transformation that would prioritise people and nature while celebrating the area’s rich cultural heritage. One of our core proposals was to create a regular 'sounding board' of well-respected global peers to be involved in the process, including Philip Coxall, Sowmya Parathasarathy, and Jan Gehl. Grateful to attend the launch of Brabazon New Town yesterday, hosted by YTL Corporation Bhd Chairman Tan Sri Sir Francis Yeoh Sock Ping and featuring an inspiring keynote by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Brabazon is set to transform Bristol as one of the UK’s largest brownfield regeneration projects, with the YTL Arena Bristol, new homes, schools, parks, commercial spaces, and a train station shaping a vibrant future. Colin Skellett’s presentation offered an engaging reflection on the site’s rich history and its ambitious future. I was particularly pleased by the special mention of the #Biolab’s contributions to the project’s centrepiece initiatives. We are thrilled to be working on the transformative landscape-driven masterplan for the landmark GSK Brentford site in West London. Working with Hadley Property Group, the 5.4ha former GSK headquarters will be redeveloped into a mixed-use neighbourhood that reconnects communities north of Great West Road with Brentford town centre, creating new pedestrian and cycle-friendly routes, dynamic public spaces, and sustainable landscapes that respond sensitively to the local area. McGregor Coxall’s interdisciplinary expertise in resilient landscape and urban design, and Biourbanism Lab research, will lead in the delivery of innovative public spaces. The exceptional project team includes Haworth Tompkins, Buro Happold, Velocity, Turley, Walsh, as well as plot architects dRMM, Studio Egret West and Metropolitan Workshop LLP. We have been working with the community through a series of co-design sessions and first public consultations are now underway.
