Thank you to everyone who joined us for the official launch of the Bilya Boorn Scholarship last Thursday! The Bilya Boorn Scholarship aims to increase the representation and participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in legal practice in Australia, by providing scholarships to First Nations students to study law at any of the Western Australian universities! We would like to congratulate the inaugural recipient, Paige Littlefair.   The launch of the Bilya Boorn Scholarship was the culmination of four years' collaboration between eight commercial law firms in Perth. It was great to be joined by members of the legal profession, bar and bench to celebrate this important milestone.   We would like to once again thank all those who were involved in the event – to our MC, Sandra Eckhert, to Cassie Chu-Yu-Chee for taking the lead in the organisation, and to Dr Richard Walley for his Welcome to Country and for sharing the significance of the scholarship's name. The name tells us where knowledge has traditionally been shared in Boorloo, which is by the Bilya (river) under a Boorn (tree).   Thank you also to this year's Selection Panel, the Honourable Justice Michael Lundberg, Emma Garlett and Jessica Woods for their work in awarding the scholarship.   The participating firms comprise Allens, Clayton Utz, Clifford Chance, Herbert Smith Freehills, Jackson McDonald, MinterEllison, Steinepreis Paganin Lawyers and Consultants,and Thomson Geer. The Bilya Boorn Scholarship was officially launched at an event in Perth last week with law student Paige Littlefair formally recognised as the 2024 scholarship recipient. The Bilya Boorn Scholarship aims to enhance the representation and participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the legal profession in Western Australia. Congratulations to Partner Sylvia Fernandez on being re-elected to a second three-year term to the Council of the Law Society of New South Wales. Sylvia is a Litigation Partner at Thomson Geer and has been a member of the Law Society's Litigation Law and & Practice Committee for more than 21 years. In 2022, she was appointed Deputy Chair of the Litigation Law & Practice Committee and serves on a number of court user groups.  Since 2022, she has also served as a member of the Professional Conduct Committee of the Law Society and in 2023 was appointed as an ordinary member of the Audit, Risk and Finance Committee of the Law Society.

Last night we hosted renowned Australian author, screenwriter, former political adviser and speechwriter Don Watson in conversation with Sorrento Writers Festival Director Corrie Perkin in our Melbourne office. In front of clients and staff, they discussed the upcoming US election on November 5 and Don's recently published Quarterly Essay "High Noon, Trump, Harris and America On The Brink".  After predicting in 2016 that it was very likely Donald Trump would win the US election that year, the audience was keen to hear Don's thoughts on what might happen at this year's election. Don and Corrie were welcomed by Adam Brooks and Loretta Reynolds. Thomson Geer is a sponsor of the Sorrento Writers Festival.
