The Institute for Industrial Decarbonisation brings together transdisciplinary expertise across UNSW Engineering, Business and other faculties to support companies and industry sectors in achieving NetZero targets. Initiatives span technological, economic and policy innovation, aligned with green industry development opportunities. Advanced clean technologies are being developed in UNSW laboratories. In tandem, teams are working with research, industry and government partners to address the regulatory, finance, infrastructure, integrated design and trade solutions needed to accelerate adoption at scale.

✈️Decarbonising the aviation industry is no longer just a dream—it's becoming a reality. The aviation sector, responsible for about 5% of Australia’s CO2 emissions, is one of the most challenging to decarbonise. 🌍While the industry explores engine improvements and sustainable biofuels, the potential of hydrogen-powered aircraft is gaining momentum. Researchers like Dr. Quentin Meyer and Professor Chuan Zhao from UNSW are leading the way with innovative hydrogen fuel cells that could revolutionise the sector. 🚀With Airbus aiming to launch its first commercial hydrogen-powered aircraft by 2035, the path to net zero in aviation by 2050 is within reach. Buildings are a major source of global warming, with over half of their lifetime emissions coming from materials and construction. 🏗️ New research by Philip Oldfield, Gerard Reinmuth, and William Craft shows that reducing embodied carbon in Australia is possible but requires significant changes in how we design, build, and reuse structures. ♻️ Globally, buildings are responsible for 37% of greenhouse gas emissions 🌍, split between operational carbon (energy use) and embodied carbon (materials and construction). While operational emissions are dropping with better insulation and renewable energy, embodied carbon remains largely unregulated and could make up 85% of building emissions by 2050. Congratulations UNSW Attila Brungs Julien Epps and IID CEO David N Eyre on the launch of UNSW Institute for Industrial Decarbonisation (IID) last week at the Art Gallery NSW. IID brings together transdisciplinary expertise across UNSW faculties to support companies and industry sectors in achieving NetZero targets. Initiatives span technological, economic and policy innovation, aligned with green industry development opportunities. Advanced clean technologies are being developed in UNSW laboratories. In tandem, teams are working with research, industry and government partners to address the regulatory, finance, infrastructure, integrated design and trade solutions needed to accelerate adoption at scale. I am proud to Chair the Industry Advisory Committee, joining colleagues Davina Rooney Jonathan Cartledge Alison Scotland Matt Harding Shay Chalmers Jon Davies Harry Jobberns and Mike Kilburn.
