As we are all enjoying the last quiet days before everyone is 'back to school', our colleagues have gathered some news for you regarding the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA)! Since our last update, the CRMA has officially entered into force, marking a significant milestone for businesses across Europe. Here’s what’s new: 📌 Official adoption: the CRMA was adopted by the European Parliament in December 2023 and approved by the Council of the EU in March 2024. It’s now fully enforceable as of May 2024. 📌 New governance structures: the establishment of the European Critical Raw Materials Board, which will play a pivotal role in achieving the EU’s strategic objectives by 2030. 🔍 Why it matters for your business: the CRMA offers businesses a unique opportunity to strengthen their supply chains, invest in sustainable practices, and stay ahead in the competitive global market. With these new regulations, companies can better prepare for supply disruptions, capitalise on circular economy models, and drive innovation in green technologies. The race to net-zero by 2050 and reducing transport emissions by 90% by 2050 is complex and multi-layered, with both electrons (electrification) and molecules (biofuels) playing crucial roles. Despite an extensive focus on electrification for road transport and an interest in hydrogen as a sustainable solution, 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 👏 Congratulations on your re-election as President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen! After weeks of speculation, the European Parliament has confirmed Ursula von der Leyen’s reappointment at the helm of the European Commission in a highly anticipated vote. With 401 votes in favour, 284 against, 15 abstentions, and 7 void votes, her nomination largely surpassed the required 361 votes. Ahead of the vote, von der Leyen outlined her vision for the next term addressing the European Parliament. In her speech, she developed a comprehensive vision for the future of European defence and security, green and social policies, enlargement, foreign policy, budget and institutional reform. ✅ At Publyon, we particularly took note of her plans to create new Commissioner portfolios for defence, housing, fisheries, and the Mediterranean region and the appointment of a Vice President to reduce red tape for businesses. With a focus on businesses, von der Leyen reaffirms the common European ambition to boost competitiveness, proposing a new Clean Industrial Deal within the first 100 days of her mandate. 🔜 Throughout the month of August, von der Leyen will interview candidates for the European Commissioner positions put forward by Member States. These candidates will next be approved by the Council of the EU and heard by the European Parliament in late September and October. The College of Commissioners will need to be appointed at once, and at earliest the new European Commission can enter into office on 1 November 2024. Here's to continued progress and collaboration under her leadership and the start of a new European Commission mandate! 💡

📣 The moment of glory for the AI Act has finally arrived! After many final votes and signatures, the AI Act has been published in the Official Journal of the EU, signifying it will enter into force on 2 August. While this marks the end of an EU legislative success story, it also kicks off a journey for the many businesses that will have to comply with the AI Act’s provisions. As explained by our Director Cathy Kremer in our Beyond the Ballot podcast, the EU is preparing this journey with the help of its brand-new AI Office. While some worry the AI Office might be too business-driven or on the contrary too inaccessible for stakeholders, the first question is the following: 📌 How will the AI Office gather the invaluable input of businesses driving AI? The AI Office should reveal more on the organisation of its stakeholder consultations by the end of this month. However, access to these consultations, gathering civil society organisations and experts across various sectors, might prove less easy than anticipated. At Publyon, we are committed to getting your voice heard. We always believe in the capacity of the EU to listen to its business ecosystem, yet we also like to look beyond the traditional frame of stakeholder consultations and into more direct and impactful solutions for your business to shape the future of AI. 🔜 Stay tuned for our upcoming announcement…

What an insightful webinar we had yesterday, exploring the outcomes of the recent snap elections in France! Our expert speakers, Mathilde DEFARGES and Etienne BODARD from Blue Star Strategies, LLC and Viktoria Vajnai from Publyon, explored the impacts of the French election results, from national scenarios for government formation to its consequences for France's influential position at the European level.   If you could not attend this webinar, here are the key takeaways your organisation should consider 👇   📌 𝗧𝗵𝗲 '𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲' 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴: despite the far-right’s initial victory, other political parties united to reverse the first-round results, a historic first in French politics. 📌 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲’𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗹𝘆: with no absolute majority for any of the political groups, France now has three nearly equal blocs: the left (New Popular Front) securing the most seats, followed by the centre (President Macron’s Ensemble) and the far-right (National Rally). 📌 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗿𝗮: power is sliding away from the presidential hands and President Macron must now engage more closely with the National Assembly, marking a significant shift in power dynamics. 📌 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗳𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴: political stakeholders must adapt their advocacy strategies to navigate this new and uncertain environment.   The election results mark only the start of a new and uncertain period in French politics. While we discussed various possibilities for the new French Assembly, from coalition formations to key appointments in France and the EU, it is crucial for your organisation to stay updated with the fast-paced political environment in both France and the EU.   Curious to know more about future political developments following these elections and how they might impact your organisation? Reach out to us at eu@publyon.com or stay tuned for the continuation of our Beyond the Ballots webinar series after the summer! 📻

📣 One day left before our webinar on the French elections results! Despite the first round of the French legislative elections resulting in Marine Le Pen’s National Rally party overwhelming victory, the so-called “Republican dam” pushed back on the far-right wave at the second round last Sunday. The left-wing New Popular Front (NPF) clinched the first position by winning 182 seats in the France’s National Assembly composed of 577 seats. Emmanuel Macron’s Ensemble coalition arrived second with 168 seats and National Rally third with 143 seats.   📌 As none of the political blocs were able to secure a majority, a so-called “hung parliament” is at sight. While a left-centrist coalition managed to stop the far-right to win the elections, the prospect of the two blocs to form a government is lacking substance as representatives of the NPF have already ruled out any alliance with the Macron and/or the right, refusing any "alliance of opposites" or any "arrangement".   ➡ What are the potential government coalition scenarios following the overhaul of the French political landscape? And what will be the subsequent impact at European level? Join our webinar as Viktoria Vajnai, Managing Partner at Publyon, Mathilde DEFARGES and Etienne BODARD, Co-founders of Blue Star Strategies, LLC, engage in a fireside chat on the French elections results and their impact n the future of the EU. Wouldn't you agree that this is one of the best times of the year? The days are getting warmer, the sun is shining a bit longer than just 5-mins per day, and EU politics is also heating up with so much still going on.   What else makes this time special? Well, for us, in July, we have our own cherished tradition: Publyon's summer party! 🎉 The time when we all come together to celebrate one another and cherish the moments we share as a team. The past few months have been incredibly busy as we worked hard to prepare for the European elections and its consequences for the European political landscape. Taking the opportunity to celebrate this year together was a great moment for us to reflect on our achievements as a business and our fruitful collaboration as a team of creative, supportive and driven individuals with a passion for the EU.    With the summer break ahead of us and the European recess around the corner, we will soon take some time to recharge. We will be back in September with a renewed drive to bring the most insightful analysis to our clients and anticipate future events. As a new mandate is about to begin, bringing a new EU programme with new priorities, fresh ideas are in the pipeline, waiting to be explored and further developed to continue enhancing our services even more.  Greetings from the Publyon team!
