How can we use technology to accelerate the pace of the energy transition? This was the challenge for the finalists of this year’s Sci-Tech challenge, our flagship Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) community initiative in Europe. Each year, secondary school students from across Europe participate in this program, which aims to encourage students to pursue STEM educations. ExxonMobil ’s chemical recycling facility in Baytown, Texas, has the capacity to process up to 40,000 tonnes of plastic waste per year. This technology, complementary to mechanical recycling, can help support a more circular economy by expanding the range of plastics that can be recycled. ExxonMobil is looking at opportunities to bring chemical recycling projects to Europe, including at our facilities in Rotterdam and Antwerp. Find out more about the type of support needed to make these a reality: https://lnkd.in/ewUhDUui

Today we celebrate United Nations World Maritime Day. This year’s theme is “Navigating the future: safety first!”, a slogan which reflects the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) work to enhance maritime safety and security, protect the marine environment, and safely anticipate the fast pace of technological change and innovations. This includes the introduction of alternative fuels and other measures to reduce GHG emissions from ships. Shipping is still the most efficient and cost-effective method of international transportation, carrying more than 90% of all goods that are transported around the world. It also accounts for around 3% of GHG emissions. Find out how marine biofuels could help reduce emissions in this crucial sector: https://lnkd.in/e49JFxty

Hydrogen emits zero greenhouse gases at its point of use. This means it has huge potential for hard to decarbonize sectors such as power generation, heavy transport and heavy industry. Scaling up production of low carbon hydrogen could be key to driving emissions reductions. Policy support, both on the supply and demand sides of the equation, will be crucial to attract the investments required for the energy transition. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e7KeFdKZ

“You can only spend your $1 billion once.” The EU has set a target for Member States to recycle 55% of plastic waste by 2030, but getting there will require more technology options. This is where chemical recycling comes in. Chemical recycling can complement traditional mechanical recycling by broadening the range of plastics that can be recycled, helping support a more circular economy for plastics. We have already deployed chemical recycling technology in the U.S. at ExxonMobil Baytown Area in Texas and would like to bring this technology to Europe. Watch Cefic’s interview with Professor Kevin Van Geem and Annick Meerschman to understand the need for supportive policy to deploy #chemicalrecycling in the EU. 👇

🔊 “Legislation is our biggest challenge, as it determines the business case. Without clarity on policy, investments are going elsewhere. It’s a wrap for the second plenary session of this new legislative term in the European Parliament. This week, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met with lawmakers and unveiled the portfolios for the new Commissioners-designate. Mario Draghi also discussed the findings of his recent report on The Future of European Competitiveness. The #DraghiReport highlights some of the serious challenges that European industries face right now. Among them: ⭕ Excessive and overlapping regulations (red tape). ⭕ Higher structural costs than other regions. ⭕ Uncompetitive policies such as reporting and due diligence requirements. Our President, Philippe Ducom, reflects on the content of the mission letters and the need for urgent action by the European Commission to reduce regulatory burden and make doing business in Europe easier. ⬇

This week, President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled the new structure of the European Commission for the next five years and published the mission letters that outline the priorities for each commissioner. Overall, these mission letters acknowledge the need to make industrial competitiveness a priority, drawing on the recent #DraghiReport, which stressed just how critical the issue has become. However, they also bring an air of continuity at a time when substantial change is necessary. The letters contain some promising instructions such as the need to simplify legislation and reduce regulatory burden, with Commissioner-designate Valdis Dombrovskis tasked with implementing “Reality Checks” as part of his simplification portfolio. They also call for energy transition policies that are more technology-neutral, a positive step to unlock industry’s potential to help the energy transition. At a time when Europe must attract billions to fund the energy transition, as the new Commission takes shape, it must act quickly to reduce regulatory burden and make doing business in Europe easier. Otherwise, we risk going down a path of decarbonization through deindustrialization: https://lnkd.in/e7RbR8td

We recently held a successful firefighting safety training session at our Brussels Campus using virtual reality (VR) technology. This innovative approach gave our employees a realistic and immersive experience in a safe and controlled environment. The use of VR also allowed employees to experience a wider range of scenarios than in conventional trainings and to do so faster. Safety is a core value for ExxonMobil . We are proud to lead the way in adopting cutting-edge solutions to keep our employees safe and well-prepared. This fun, engaging 20-min activity could go a long way in ensuring we are all remain ready in case of an emergency. Thank you to our Safety, Security, Health and Environment committee for organizing these sessions. Did you participate? Let us know your impression. #Innovation #SafetyFirst #VirtualReality
