  • MARIA QUEZADA (Mayela), Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) Strategy Lead at ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions, is always thinking about how her customers in hard-to-abate sectors can more easily adopt emission-reducing technologies. For industries such as power generation, steel and cement, carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a solution that can deliver significant emissions reductions. But to truly deliver this technology at scale will require having the right infrastructure in place. To address this need, ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions has made significant steps towards expanding its CCS network in the US with the acquisition of Denbury Inc. “By investing in CCS infrastructure, we are making this technology a more reliable and commercially-viable solution for our customers,” says Quezada. Onboarding: The next generation of Low Carbon Solutions talent In this ongoing series, we meet some of the newest talent working in the energy transition at Low Carbon Solutions. Introducing (or reintroducing) Amy Albers Kamenova, a carbon capture & storage (CCS) economist (who rejoined ExxonMobil after going back for her MBA)  Her current role in one sentence: Amy works with the Low Carbon Solutions commercial team, supporting the carbon capture and storage business, where she analyzes the economics for the CCS portfolio. Why Amy chose Low Carbon Solutions: “It felt relevant not only to the corporation but relevant to society in general. Low Carbon Solutions is fast-paced and dynamic. It’s a new space and it’s not something anyone can say they have decades of experience in. We’re all trying to figure it out together, so the element of challenge is both inevitable and essential. What has surprised Amy since arriving/returning to ExxonMobil? “It’s exciting to come to Low Carbon Solutions because it’s so unique from the rest of the corporation. In a sense, I have never seen an organization within ExxonMobil commercially move so fast and act with such urgency.” What advice does Amy have for someone considering joining Low Carbon Solutions? “You have to be willing to collaborate. Working together is imperative to what we are doing.” Two adjectives Amy uses to describe her new role: “Important and challenging.” Interested in joining Amy to make an impact today? Today, we are excited to announce our second major carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) project with CF Industries, one of the world’s largest ammonia producers, in Yazoo City, Mississippi. We’re proud of the #realworldprogress and collaboration with CF Industries in helping them achieve their 2030 emissions intensity reduction goals. We have executed a definitive commercial agreement with CF Industries to transport and permanently store up to 0.5 million metric tons per year (MTA) of captured carbon dioxide (CO2) from their Mississippi facility. This project expects to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 50% of the site’s total CO2 emissions, and this is expected to begin in 2028. This agreement marks a new milestone for ExxonMobil: bringing the total CO2 we’ve agreed to store for customers up to 5.5 MTA. CF Industries expects the project to qualify for tax credits under Section 45Q of the Internal Revenue Code, which provides a credit per metric ton of CO2 sequestered. Our first project with CF Industries is expected to begin in 2025 at the CF Industries facility in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. CF Industries will leverage our CCS capabilities and we will work together on sequestering up to 2 MTA of CO2 annually. From our President Dan Ammann: “We’re serious about expanding carbon capture – a safe, proven solution for hard-to-decarbonize industries. Our agreement with CF Industries is the latest example of how we can help industrial customers achieve significant progress, quickly and economically.” Read the full press release here: https://bit.ly/3Yl9g6Q. Onboarding: The next generation of Low Carbon Solutions talent This is an ongoing series where we’ll meet some of the new talent who joined Low Carbon Solutions over the past year. We’ll learn about what motivates them to work in the energy transition and get a glimpse into their new roles. First up is Abhinav Charan, head of commercial optimization in CCS. His current role in one sentence: He helps optimize the CCS ecosystem in the U.S. Gulf Coast. Why he chose Low Carbon Solutions: “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to come to an organization that has the wherewithal and the capabilities to really drive the energy transition, build a compelling new business, and frankly, drive market creation. It’s truly exciting to be in the middle of the action and help shape the energy transition story as it unfolds.” Abhinav’s view on the CCS ecosystem in the U.S. Gulf Coast: “The Gulf Coast is the leading global hub for low carbon solutions. You're able to leverage some of the CO2 policy around carbon capture and sequestration and use that as a monetization pathway for emissions or leverage the enhanced oil recovery pathway, or even look at industrial sales to use carbon dioxide for various product uses across a diverse set of industries. So ultimately you end up with a commodity that can be leveraged in different ways to create value for the corporation and society. And this ties back directly to the whole equation that we’re working towards: We’re driving the energy transition to help society get to net zero, and also building a compelling business that creates and maximizes value from this opportunity.” Two words that describe your job: “Energizing and exciting in the same go.” Interested in joining Abhinav to be at the center of making a difference today?
