I had the privilege of co-curating two panels in IDEATE 5, at the ULI Hong Kong Conference, 23 Oct 2024, in collaboration with the Technology Committee. A few takeaways from the 2 panels : Hub City 2.0: Optimising the Supply Chain for High Value Cargo session: - Hong Kong stands out as a unique and fortunate location, thanks to our strategic position, extensive knowledge, and the trust we've established with numerous countries as a cargo transit hub. Our low tax rates and efficient clearing processes further enhance our appeal. -In spite of various challenges, companies like SF Express are actively engaging with the government and relevant stakeholders to explore how technologies such as "Low Attitude Economy" can be implemented. We don’t need to simply imitate others; instead, we should creatively leverage technology and AI in our cargo and shipping sectors. Let’s take action to maintain our competitive edge as Hub City 2.0. Lauren Hurcombe Iris Tang Rui Hua Chang Vincent Cheung #SFSupplyChain #Logistics #Innovation Talent Management- How diversity drives organizational success: - It was awakening to hear from our panelists about the significant opportunities that many corporations still have to improve diversity and inclusion, and to genuinely create workplaces that attract and retain talent. - To all C-suite executives and those influential in Human Resources, if we can all take a proactive step forward, we can make Hong Kong a better place. Let’s take action now! Judge people on their abilities, not their disabilities. Presenter & TEDx Speaker | Author | Professor | Board Member | Future of Work Specialist | Marketing Leader | Women Empowerment Activist | Helping professionals & organisations build impactful brands
Starting in 2019, Hong Kong experienced a net outflow of professionals, this has impacted the diversity of the working population in the city, and while population figures have risen since the end of Covid restrictions, the diversity profile has shifted. The challenge for Hong Kong as an international business hub is to attract and retain global talent, to nurture emerging Hong Kong leaders, and to promote diverse representation across gender, ethnicity and origin. Yesterday at the ULI Hong Kong conference, I had the true pleasure of hosting a session that addressed exactly this. Luye YANG, Mathew Gollop, Claude Touikan and Chan-yau Chong shared how their companies are driving meaningful change in representation and creating inclusive working environments. Our conversation also delved into the barriers hindering diversity and discussed the incentives needed to attract top talents. It was so inspiring to be part of this conversation as we navigate the path towards diversity in leadership and its positive impact on organizational performance. My personal top takeaways: ☝🏼 Judge people on their abilities, not their disabilities. 🧠 Give people projects that inspire them to create and innovate. 💪🏼 Believe in yourself and make your own challenges your strengths. 🌍 Welcome people from diverse backgrounds, but more importantly empower them to work together, despite their differences. What a powerful session, and an excellent conference overall. Huge congratulations to the entire #ULI team and thanks to everyone that attended! #urbanland #dei #talent #retention #equity #diversity

Jolly me - the ULI Hong Kong annual #conference swept through the new 1880 Hong Kong yesterday. Led by Bernard Charnwut Chan and re-emphasized by John Witt - #HongKong has seen worse days before and yet has never had a better future ahead! The time of apathy and complacency is coming to an end and a clear call to action for the private sector was heard. While the fundamentals are sound, the situation is dire - there is no time to waste. Pulling things together (and pulling the government along) will allow charting a new path for the city. Finance, education, sports, arts & culture are only some of the traits to build a future on. Being a part of the planning committee together with Ariel Shtarkman, Hannah Jeong & Eli Konvitz, it was great to see how momentum can build up in a crowd through frank, open dialogue and addressing key issues head on. Let's see who will step up to write the next chapter of this unique place #homekong. Urban Land Institute

I had the privilege to co-curate the sustainability stream on retrofitting at the ULI Hong Kong Conference 2024 with my Decarbonization and Resilience Committee. Given the rising number of aging buildings and their high energy consumption, it is imperative to prioritize retrofits in HK. Here are the key takeaways: 1. Buildings owned by large companies are considering or performing retrofits for investment and ESG reasons. More gaps are seen in privately and/or multi-owned properties. 2. Data drives success in energy reduction, net zero roadmap development, and future maintenance prediction. Technologies have proven to shorten payback of retrofitting actions significantly in local cases. 3. Retrofitted buildings will attract better tenants, but commercial and retail interiors also generate a major portion of Scope 3 emissions and wastage. Some luxury retailers have already rolled out global strategies to retrofit their interiors. It’s time for landlords to catch up. 4. Consider the social aspects of retrofitting. Europe and the U.S. provide great examples of retrofitting heritage buildings. There are also opportunities in HK to repurpose buildings for our changing demographics, e.g. converting idle commercial buildings to residential with an aim to address the housing issue. 5. We already have the relevant technologies and know-how, as seen in our homegrown low carbon building materials to AI-enabled systems. 6. The government should follow other key markets to mandate energy performance certification and provide incentives for retrofitting. Thanks to our moderators, speakers, and participants for a full day of enlightening discussions. The rest of the conference reflected on the lessons HK has learned from the past few years and where we should go from here. I truly believe that if we take retrofitting seriously as a city, it will not only enhance tenancy, valuation or ESG performance of individual buildings but also the long-term competitiveness of Hong Kong’s property market. #ULI #Sustainability #Realestate

It’s a wrap! I’m thrilled to have contributed my time and ideas to the success of the #ULIHongKongConference. During my garden leave, I had the privilege of collaborating with our Program and Event Committee members & ULI Eli Konvitz Jan L. Yvonne Lui Dan Voellm Ariel Shtarkman to develop ambitious concepts for this year’s event (extensively!!). We aimed to create an engaging experience that would inspire our members to learn and exchange new ideas. Unlike traditional conferences, we organized a main forum along with five breakout sessions throughout the day. The format included fireside chats, panels, exhibitions, debates, and Tedex talks, ensuring a diverse and dynamic agenda. I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to all our speakers for their enthusiastic participation, as well as to the ULI team for managing the logistics so seamlessly. Special kudos to Eli Konvitz for your dedication! Looking ahead, I’m excited for the #ULIAsiaSummit in 2025, where Hong Kong will be the host city. Hong Kong has long been a hub for businesses and tourists from around the globe. Its unique East-meets-West culture, stunning natural surroundings, and modern infrastructure make it one of the most vibrant cities worldwide. In recent years, global sentiment around Hong Kong has faced challenges, but the business community is eager to see the city re-establish itself as Asia’s World City. Let’s continue to work together to showcase Hong Kong’s unique strengths and opportunities! Thanks again for my best panels: Wilfred Ma Athena Tse @christopher kwok Clay Grubb Laurence Tang

Hong Kong needs to hustle & engage to remain at the top of the global city stage and build a future that is relevant to the 3 billion people in Asia / Asean. This recurring theme was highlighted at the ULI Hong Kong Annual Conference held on 23 October 2024, themed "Hong Kong on the Global Stage: Connecting the world, building our future." The event brought together key industry leaders to discuss the city's future and we had the privilege of the Honourable Bernard Charnwut Chan, GBM, GBS, JP – Chairman and President, Asia Financial Holdings Limited to really challenge the ULI Community to be the leaders that assist Hong Kong to rethink the cities future, Susheela Rivers chaired a panel with Don Taylor of Swire Properties, Edwin Chan of New World Development Company Limited, Michael Smith of Hongkong Land Limited, and Ricky Lui of Hysan Development Company Limited. They provided valuable insights on positioning real estate for the future, emphasizing experiential retail, health and wellness, and the integration of art and culture to keep city districts thriving. The conference also introduced a dynamic new format with intimate, tailored interactive sessions with a limited group discussing; Culture, Sports and Tourism, Investment and Doing Business, Sustainability and Society, Future Generations, and Hong Kong Business Expertise and Knowledge. Also great to be one of the first users of Swire's newest version of Two Taikoo Place, Quarry Bay and the Social Club 1880 Hong Kong. #Connect, #Inspire, #Lead. #ULIHongKong Jan L. It's a wrap! Its been an absolutely fantastic day at the 2024 𝐔𝐋𝐈 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐊𝐨𝐧𝐠 c𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, jam-packed with exceptional speakers, lively debate and fascinating conversations. This afternoon, Sarah Cooper, Tom Andrews, Phil Kim, Andrew Moore and Aamir Sakhia participated in a healthy two-on-two debate session on Hong Kong's retail market landscape. Retail figures reached historic lows in 2020, and while the market has since rebounded, its nothing like it was before. The panelists each had 5-minute slots to argue whether Hong Kong can and will reinvent its retail proposition. Watch this space! Eli Konvitz, Jonathan Cummings, Susheela Rivers and Jeremy Sheldon took us on a fascinating journey, sharing their perspectives on 'Brand Hong Kong'. The key takeaway? Leave nostalgia behind and move forward. Let's rebuild Hong Kong's narrative, make an impact and show the rest of the world what we can contribute. We closed with a fireside chat between Raymond Chow ULI Asia Pacific Executive Committee and long-standing ULI member, and John Witt, Group Managing Director of Jardine Mattheson. The pair reflected on the day, discussing why Hong Kong is not only an International Financial Center, but also an arts and cultural center. John summed up an overwhelmingly positive afternoon in one sentence: "𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐊𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐮𝐬" Thank you to all of our speakers, moderators, members, organizers, participants and sponsors. Your dedication helped to make ULI Hong Kong 2024 a resounding success! See you in 2025! In the meantime, lets embrace change, innovate and continue to champion Hong Kong! #ULIHongKong #AnnualConference #UrbanDevelopment

Our annual ULI Hong Kong conference is off to a fantastic start! This year we are focusing on 'Hong Kong's place on the global stage' and were delighted to welcome over 250 leaders in the real estate business this morning. Christine Loh from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology kicked off the programme, welcoming the Honourable Bernard Charnwut Chan who delivered a powerful keynote address on embracing change. Hong Kong has an identity crisis. Too complacent for too long, it's time to rethink and take action in order to remain relevant and competitive. We all have a part to play in shaping the future of Hong Kong. Next up, industry leaders Susheela Rivers, Edwin Chan, Ricky Lui, Michael Smith, and Don Taylor shared their visions for Hong Kong from the developer's perspective. From initiatives that bring residents together to revitalize entire neighborhoods, to their approaches to placemaking and community development, it was an uplifting session that captured the positive outlook for Hong Kong. Thank you to all of our panelists and speakers for an insightful and inspiring morning. Stay tuned for more to come this afternoon! #ULIHongKong #AnnualConference #UrbanDevelopment
