🌊 A timely and crucial report for real estate leaders worldwide: "Surge: Coastal Resilience and Real Estate" Do you know that approximately 40% of the world’s population lives within 62 miles (100 km) of a coast? Many of our major cities and vibrant urban areas are located along these shorelines. However, coastal hazards exacerbated by climate change are increasingly affecting these communities and their populations. This report is a vital resource for both private- and public-sector professionals, as well as communities. It offers best practices, insightful case studies, and innovative strategies to help us integrate coastal resilience into land use and real estate practices, allowing coastal regions not just to avert and recover from climate-related disasters, but also to thrive. “A lot of traditional approaches have been on the defensive side, and it’s been hard engineering—gray infrastructure, bulkheads, riprap—that you see in every city in terms of the way in which we’ve traditionally defended against the ocean. Nowadays, we do a lot more on the green side in terms of how we incorporate ecology and more natural solutions into that coastline to be able to defend over time.” — Scott Dunn, Chief Strategy Officer, Asia, AECOM The Asian Development Bank (ADB) estimated a need for approximately US$1.7 trillion per year in infrastructure investment between 2016 and 2030 to meet its development goals. Of that amount, US$200 billion is specifically allocated for addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation costs. Globally, 1-in-7 people live in informal settlements—a number projected to rise to 1-in-4 by 2030. 🔎Look at the hidden logic and design behind India's urban "slums" Across the world, 1-in-7 people live in slums, and this figure is anticipated to increase to 1-in-4 by 2030. Our ULI member Kali Marnane has spent the last seven years exploring how these informal settlements exhibit coherent spatial patterns that foster privacy, social cohesion, cultural expression, and resource acquisition, challenging common misconceptions. Drawing on in-depth research in the city of Ahmedabad, Marnane identified four key design features that can help improve living conditions in informal settlements: 📍Locating homes near work, schools, healthcare, family 🏗 Allowing resident-driven design & construction 👨👩👧👦 Clustering homes to boost social connections 🏡Incorporating private, semi-private, public spaces Shifting the language we use around “slums” is also critical to avoid perpetuating negative stereotypes. 🤝Driving Down Whole-Life Carbon Emissions🎯 As owners and investors face mounting pressure to make new projects compliant with modern environmental standards, the concept of “whole-life” carbon has become a focus of increased interest. The model approximates the total emissions of a structure, both during construction and over its lifespan. A panel at the 2024 Asia Pacific Summit in Tokyo took a hard look at the implications of this approach. Read the key insights from Giovanni Cossu, Eddie Tse, Pritya Widiarta, and Rosie L. here: https://lnkd.in/gkM3CVQY.
