The first of two projects Sisk have in the centre of Sheffield is Kelham Neepsend, an Active Travel scheme that includes one of the UK’s first ‘Dutch-style’ roundabouts - this prioritises pedestrians and cyclists by providing zebra crossings on each arm, and segregated cycling infrastructure around the roundabout. There is also a Dutch-style Priority Square Junction further up the road, which offers similar benefits at a former old T-junction. Sisk are also creating new landscaping, paving and Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) around the project, creating a much more beneficial environment in the area.
A short distance away, at the Fargate Future High Street Fund project, the team are progressing well, creating new landscaping, green planting, waste management, seating areas and lighting that will transform Fargate into a welcoming, greener space for residents, trade and visitors to the city as it transforms into the modern era. Again, SuDS are to be installed.
The Kelham Neepsend scheme is on course for finishing several weeks early, in November 2024, whilst Sisk’s works at the Fargate Future High Street Fund site will be completed in early 2025.
Lee Long, Project Manager, Sisk, says: “We are really happy with the progress of both projects. We’ve had some unique challenges along the way which we’ve overcome - it underlines how client focused and flexible we are at Sisk. The final results of both projects will really help the transformation of Sheffield as it pushes towards a greener, cleaner future. We thank everyone in Sheffield for their patience throughout this exciting project.”
