Roman Martin has been promoted to Professor in Economic Geography!
➡ Congratulations Roman, can you tell us more about your research?
- Thank you for the congratulations! My research covers several interconnected themes within economic geography. A major focus for me is the economic geography of #innovation and regional development. Regional development is influenced by many factors, including economic structures, social dynamics, and institutional arrangements at regional, national, and supranational levels. The complexity of regional development makes it a fascinating and never boring research area.
➡ What are you focusing on right now and what kind of societal impact can the result of this research have?
- Right now, I am exploring how regional economies respond to various shocks and crises. Given the ongoing climate crisis, I am particularly interested in how regional economies can transition toward greater environmental #sustainability.
- Our economy and society face major challenges that require not only technological advancements but also societal and economic transitions. Therefore, it is important to understand how regions and industries develop and shift into new fields. What are the responsibilities of private firms versus the state? How can policy support a green transition? And how can consumers contribute?
- By addressing these questions, my research provides insights for policymakers and industry stakeholders in Europe. Ultimately, I hope to contribute knowledge that supports sustainable economic growth. As researchers and teachers, we cannot solve all grand challenges, but we can add smaller pieces of knowledge to the big puzzle of sustainable economic development.
