About us

FRAM is an interdisciplinary academic center focusing on different aspects of chemical mixtures. It was founded in 2016 as part of the University of Gothenburg's initiative on centres for Global Societal Challenges (UGOT Challenges). Today, FRAM has members from the Natural Science departments, School of Business, Economics and Law and Occupational and Environmental Medicine at both the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers.

Summer is upon us and most of you are hopefully enjoying vacation, but FRAM never rests. Scientists Jenny Egardt and Ingela Dahllöf are looking into how potential nitrification in marine sediment bacteria is affected by chemical mixtures sampled in the Stenungsund area. Nitrification is a process performed by bacteria that turns reduced nitrogen (ammonia) into nitrite and nitrate. This process is an important part of the larger nitrogen cycle, and help reduce the amount of available nitrogen. A ban on open loop scrubber emissions next year and a total ban of all scrubber emissions in Swedish waters 2029 is being suggested by the Swedish government (link in Swedish below), which is welcomed by scientists. “We, and other researchers have shown what detrimental effects scrubber emissions can pose in pelagic ecosystems and a ban can’t come soon enough” says Ingela Dahllöf, Professor in ecotoxicology at the University of Gothenburg and co-author of a recent study on effects of closed loop scrubber waters. https://lnkd.in/eeE7AdRG Read more on the proposed ban here (Swedish): https://lnkd.in/dnhpfG_M Read more on effects of low-sulphur fuels: https://lnkd.in/ewuR4XZR
