Colleagues Salah Rahimi, May Hicks, Alastair Conway, David Easton and Ioannis Violatos were delighted to host a visit and meeting by Matt Nash (Commercial Director) and Lee Thomas (Business Development Director) both from Somers Forge Ltd yesterday. Their visit follows previous conversations and on-line meetings with the Advanced Forming Research Centre - so this was a great opportunity for the Centre to demonstrate our excellent capabilities in the forging, forming and materials sectors. After detailed discussions around the table, Matt and Lee were shown what we can do and talk with engineers on the shop-floor and workshops. From their manufacturing facility in Halesowen, right in the heart of the industrial Black Country, they operate a number of Forging Presses and Hammers which gives them a unique capability to manufacture components from as little as 1 Kg to 80 tonnes with lengths up to 23 Metres. The Machining and Engineering facilities compliment the range of forgings they produce offering Turning, Boring, Honing and 5 Axis milling which enables them to supply fully finished components ready for installation. Somers state of the art machine shop allows for machining up to 100 tonnes! We saw another great attendance at the Advanced Forming Research Centre's "Sheffield Forging & Forming Forum" again yesterday (Tuesday 11th June) at the OEC Sheffield, (Lauren Rees) made up of both large and smaller businesses. Forum members from across the UK gathered to hear two great presentations, firstly from Michael Ward - Professor of Practice from the Advanced Nuclear Research Centre on the "Supply chain implications from the UK Nuclear Roadmap and then from Gareth Barker - Chief Operating Officer at Sheffield Forgemasters who gave an intriguing update on their Recapitalisation Programme since the MOD's acquisition of the business, the magnitude of the plans is just brilliant!! Thank you to them both and their organisations. Once again the networking element of the Forum worked really well, great conversations, new introductions and catch-ups with contact details being swapped. Thank you to all those who were able to join us and for taking the time out to help make the Forum what it is.
