Cleveland Clinic London is delighted to announce that Professor Prasanna Sooriakumaran (Prof PS), Professor of Urology and Consultant Urological & Robotic Surgeon at Cleveland Clinic London, has been appointed as lead specialist committee member on the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) early value assessment panel of robot-assisted procedures for soft-tissue procedures. In this role, Prof PS will review robotic technologies that help surgeons perform procedures in the soft tissues of the body, including blood vessels and internal organs. He will also be part of the lead team reporting the committee’s findings to the Medical Technologies Advisory Committee. Trained as a robotic surgeon and academic at Cornell University, the Karolinska Institute, and the University of Oxford, Prof PS has performed over 1,000 robotic procedures and published over 200 articles and book chapters in the field of robotic urology. He looks forward to using his clinical and academic expertise to contribute to NICE’s assessment of which soft-tissue procedures in the UK might benefit from the use of robotic technology and how this technology should be used in the UK. Professor Michael Papadakis, Consultant Sports Cardiologist at Cleveland Clinic London, recently joined Medical News Today's ‘In Conversation’ podcast where they explored the effects of putting the human body under a lot of stress with extreme exercise. “We’ve known for many, many years that exercise and physical activity in general are good for you”, he said. “But is it possible that if we take exercise to the extremes, instead of being beneficial, it can start being detrimental”. Professor Papadakis notes that for the majority of people, even those who compete at high levels, incorporating physical activity into their daily routine is beneficial.
