📸 The Skanska Costain STRABAG Joint Venture has reached a key milestone on HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd, removing the 850-tonne tunnel boring machine, Sushila, from the vent shaft. Sushila was one of the tunnel boring machines used to construct the Northolt Tunnel. She completed her five-mile journey at the end of last year and has excavated more than 1.2 million tonnes of earth and installed 4,217 tunnel rings. HS2 will support a more prosperous, resilient and decarbonised UK, helping to drive economic growth through additional #rail capacity and greener journeys. Well done to all involved for this #engineering feat! 💪 #TransformingPerformance #infrastructure
TBM Sushila gets lifted out! 🏗️ Here's a spectacular shot of the giant TBM being lifted out from the Green Park Way vent shaft. Over the weekend, the TBM's cutterhead, front and middle shield, weighing 850 tonnes were lifted out using a 750 tonne gantry crane, marking the end of her 5-mile journey. 👏 Kudos to our expert team for successfully completing this nearly 16-hour-long operation - an incredible feat of engineering! Your dedication made it possible. A huge thank you to everyone involved! #HS2 #PassionateAboutExcellence #OneTeamSpirit Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dJNXQHkd 📷👇.

As part of the SMP Alliance, we're committed to our shared mission to deliver enhancements to the strategic #road network, creating a more prosperous and resilient UK. Now open for traffic, the M1 J28-30 scheme is the final part of the NEAR (National Emergency Area Retrofit) North programme. A total of 41 additional emergency areas on the M1 in Derbyshire have been constructed as part of National Highways’ NEAR programme. The NEAR scheme was introduced by National Highways to reduce the distance between emergency refuge bays along smart motorways to provide vehicles and drivers with a safe space to pull over. Well done to all involved 👏
Our M1 J28-30 scheme is now open for traffic, making 18 more emergency areas available on this section of the M1 in Derbyshire. It's yet another development that show’s there no let up whatsoever by SMP Alliance in our determination to successfully deliver the National Emergency Area Retrofit (NEAR) programme by the end of this month for the benefit of all road users. Final traffic management / cones were removed on schedule on Sunday 9 March, in a move that reflects the #productivity and #efficiency of our NEAR North colleagues, who have constructed a total of 41 additional emergency areas on the M1 in Derbyshire and South Yorkshire. This team is led by Alliance on-site assembly partner Costain Group PLC working in conjunction with design partners in WSP in the UK and Jacobs, as well as production management partner Fluor Corporation and colleagues in National Highways, both within the Alliance and in the Operations Directorate (Midlands), including the Operations Recovery Team. Our hugely #collaborative and supportive #suppliers working alongside the NEAR North team on the M1 J28-30 scheme include: 4way Consulting, Adey Steel Group, Albatross, Asset International Structures Ltd, Asset VRS, Chellan Highway Safety Services Ltd, The Clearway Group Ltd, CR Civil Engineering, FM Conway Ltd, Hill & Smith Infrastructure Ltd, HW Martin (Traffic Management) Limited , Machin & son Ltd, MJ Hughes Construction, Mobile VMS Ltd., Mway Comms, Roocroft Road Restraint Systems, ScrewFast Foundations Limited, THREESHIRES LIMITED, Toppesfield Limited, Van Elle and WJ. The M1 J28-30 team would also like to acknowledge and thank Derbyshire Police, East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust and East Derbyshire Fire & Rescue for their support with this scheme. Commenting on this success, Toby Bedford CEng MICE, SMP Alliance’s Head of Production for the NEAR Programme said: “NEAR North were the first NEAR team on the ground with the task of completing three significant schemes on the northern sections of the M1. Thank you to team leads Dale Flower and Jacky Li along with everyone involved for their monumental effort to successfully and safely deliver 41 new emergency areas on time. “We also hugely appreciate them openly sharing their progress, experiences and learnings with their NEAR Midlands and NEAR South colleagues. This is something that reflects the Alliance’s #collaborative way of working and has positively contributed to the delivery of the overall NEAR programme.” For more information on NEAR, see: https://lnkd.in/ebQNkDX8 #highways #roads #construction #civilengineering #infrastructure

All our projects help create a sustainable future, but how do you transform soil waste into a valuable resource? Our group environmental director Geraint Rowlands, spoke to Soil Link about reusing materials to support sustainable #construction. Listen below to their conversation that covers: 💡 The importance of early engagement with the planning process to minimise material produced 💡 The advantage of having a well-structured system for identifying opportunities that deliver maximum benefit. 💡 The pivotal role of a circular economy methodology in repurposing and reusing materials. As part of our work on the London Power Tunnels with our customer National Grid, we reused material that would otherwise be classed as waste, with approximately 48,386m3 of spoil diverted from landfill 💪 This also removed 4,838 wagon movements off UK roads 🚛 #SustainableInfrastructure #TransformingPerformance
Smart Soil Reuse: Planning for a Sustainable Future 🌱 In this podcast clip, William Rundle and Geraint Rowland, Group Environmental Director at Costain Group PLC discuss the power of strategic material reuse and Costain’s sustainable construction practices. Geraint explores their recent London Power Tunnels project, demonstrating how early design reviews, advice from the CL:AIRE DoW CoP and cross-project collaboration can transform potential “waste” into valuable resources. Commenting on our FY24 Results, CEO Alex Vaughan said: “I am pleased that we had another good year with adjusted operating profit at the upper end of expectations. We delivered a further increase in operating profit and earnings per share, building on our strong financial performance track record of the past three years. Adjusted operating margin increased significantly, exceeding our target for FY 24, and we remain on track to deliver our margin target for FY 25. “The record growth in forward work position is expected to deliver further progress in FY 25 and FY 26, followed by a step change in FY 27 performance. The quality, balance and better risk profile of our forward work position of £5.4bn across our two divisions, together with continued investment in our chosen markets, gives us growing visibility on future revenue and margin. We continue to deliver improvements and invest in the business, and are increasingly confident in the Group’s growth prospects, with our strong cash position and cash generation enabling the Group to enhance returns to shareholders.” You can watch our results presentation here: https://bit.ly/3DxzxXs #WeAreCostain #Sustainableinfrastructure #TransformingPerformance #ImprovingPeoplesLives

After 10 years of #construction, the 25km Thames Tideway Tunnel is now fully connected, creating a more resilient London by supporting a growing economy and population, and protecting the river from pollution. Costain, as part of a joint venture with VINCI Construction Grands Projets and Bachy Soletanche, has delivered the east region of this amazing project, which is helping to create a sustainable future. 🚍 The main #tunnel is 7.2 metres in diameter (equivalent to three London double-decker buses) 🔦 Abbey Mills Pumping Station in East London has the deepest section at 66 metres 🦸 Six Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) were used in total. In the East, TBM Selina is named after Dr Selina Fox, who founded the Bermondsey Medical Mission in 1904, and TBM Annie is named after Annie Scott Dill Russell, the first female scientist to work at the Greenwich Observatory 🏊 The Tideway London Tunnel has storage capacity of 1.6m cubic metres or around 600 Olympic-size swimming pools. The project is on track to be fully finished (with testing complete) later this year. Thames Water will then operate the system as part of its London wastewater network.
