Highlighting the Security and Resilience recommendations from the National Cyber-Physical Infrastructure programme.
Key actions to advance cyber-physical infrastructure - 1 The National Cyber-Physical Infrastructure (NCPI) programme has announced a series of recommendations to government from its 2024 workshops. Covering industry key challenges and enablers, security and resilience, interoperability and standards, frameworks and guidance, the workshops gathered 170 specialists, and prioritised recommendations for next steps. This week, we highlight the Key Challenges workshop, from AMRC's Factory 2050, Sheffield. Future infrastructure should mandate cyber-physical components from outset. UK initiatives are pushing forward for some aspects, but further support needed. Developing frameworks for federated data ecosystems will drive long-term innovation, with the goal of creating resilient and adaptable systems. Minimal interoperability standards enable seamless technology integration. Clear, enforceable regulations with sector-specific and personal data guidelines establish measurable compliance. Data-sharing frameworks must build on the value of shared information. Government to support and give leadership, positioning digital and data as essential national infrastructure for economic growth. Recommendations to the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology are to: 1. Embed Resilience in Infrastructure: Future infrastructure projects must mandate cyber-physical infrastructure components from the outset and critically within procurement to enhance security, operational value and overall adaptability. 2. Support Long-Term Innovation and System Design: Build frameworks for distributed and federated data ecosystems, avoiding compromising shortcuts towards broader long-term objectives. 3. Establish Clear Standards for Interoperability: Develop and mandate minimal interoperability standards across physical, digital and organisational aspects to ensure systems and technologies work seamlessly together. 4. Prioritise Clear and Enforceable Regulations: Regulations, especially personal and sector-specific, should be unambiguous to universally ensure testable compliance. 5.
