The American Geophysical Union (AGU), the world's largest association of Earth and space scientists, has launched its ethical framework principles to guide research into climate interventions, often referred to as geoengineering. As we continue our fight against the climate crisis, interest in climate intervention as a strategy for tackling global warming has grown. Climate intervention projects are large-scale technological interventions that attempt to alter the climate in a way that halts, slows down or reverses global warming. However, the growth in interest around these interventions raises several ethical issues that must be taken into consideration ahead of research, as well as in funding and policy proposals. That is why the AGU has developed a set of ethical framework principles, to raise these issues, and to guide and stimulate dialogue. The framework is divided into five principles: 1 - Responsible Research 2 - Holistic Climate Justice 3 - Inclusive Public Participation 4 - Transparency 5 - Informed Governance Find out more in Lara William's piece in Bloomberg👇 https://lnkd.in/drfv7HhM It has been an honour to collaborate with the American Geophysical Union team, Lisa Graumlich, Janice Lachance, JD, FASAE, Mark Shimamoto, Josh Weinberg and Samson Reiny. Congratulations to the Greenhouse team who have worked on this launch Nick Boyle, David Mason, Billy Holmes, Vanessa Terschluse, Emilia Mihaescu and Harry Rushworth.🎉

It's almost time for #COP29. The top priority at this ‘finance COP’ is establishing a new global goal for climate finance to replace the previous $100 billion target. Developing nations are calling for a new goal of US$1 trillion per year. Significant disagreements are expected, but it is crucial that the new goal aligns with the Paris Agreement and explicitly supports nature as a key ally in combating climate change. I'm heading to Baku with Georgia Crump to support the Nature4Climate Coalition and the international media reporting on COP29 with announcements, stories and interviews. What are we calling on leaders to deliver? 1️⃣ Triple finance for nature by 2030 to meet climate and biodiversity goals. 2️⃣ Create ambitious and investable Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to mobilize private sector capital into nature-based solutions. 3️⃣ Harmonize and align plans, policies, and budgets across the Rio Conventions ahead of COP30 to ensure cohesive action. 🌍 Late to share this, but thrilled to celebrate a powerful Forbes piece by Daphne Ewing-Chow highlighting Henry Musa Kpaka's work to advance President Bio's vision and put Sierra Leone's bold journey toward food sovereignty on the global stage. Daphne writes, “It’s not just about changing the way the country grows food; it’s about reshaping Sierra Leone’s future and reclaiming its agricultural legacy.” Sierra Leone’s commitment to food security through Feed Salone isn’t just a national effort but a story of resilience and inspiration for the world. As a founding member of the Alliance of Champions for Food Systems Transformation (ACF), Sierra Leone is also championing change across Africa and beyond, setting a powerful example in the push for resilient, equitable and sustainable food systems. This story is a testament to the transformative power of agriculture for communities and economies alike. Stay tuned for more #ACF updates during COP29 next week. 💃🌱🌊 Just returned from a whirlwind few weeks in Cali for #CBDCOP16. With yesterday's news in the US, it’s crucial to sustain faith in the multilateral process and prevent the outcome from giving other member states an excuse to fall back on their commitments at COP29 next week and beyond. Here’s a brief reflection on CBD COP16 and the hope it instilled. As always, it was inspiring to be surrounded by the brightest minds and the beating heart of the biodiversity movement. Cali was alive with salsa, and the optimism that music brings was palpable from the moment we landed. Two years ago in Montreal, 190 countries agreed to protect and restore nature. At CBD COP16, we made limited progress beyond the promises of that agreement toward the urgent actions we need. But there were some important successes worth celebrating… Our team, along with Emma Grace Wilkinson, Imogen Jolliffe, Helen Bell, Sam Mehmet, Sophie Rivett-Carnac back at base, supported the new initiative Together for the Ocean, which rallied partners around the 30x30 target. Significant advances were announced including new funding commitments for the high seas and key decisions were made around Ecologically and Biologically Significant Marine Areas (EBSAs), ensuring that crucial habitats are prioritised for protection. We also celebrated newly designated marine protected areas in Puerto Rico and the Azores, expanding biodiversity safeguards in these regions. Another breakthrough was the DSI agreement - which could generate over £1 billion annually for nature conservation. Indigenous Peoples and local communities were also officially upgraded to a permanent body within the negotiations. It was an honour to play a small part in supporting the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB) across the negotiations. Additional highlights included Cosmo Sheldrake’s performance of his new song for the cedars, Sõnja Guajajara’s powerful words on the call for a ‘year of united action on climate, nature, and food,’ and an inspiring Earthrise Studio event celebrating women’s stories. But these achievements were tempered by continued indecision and delays. CBD COP16 was a huge opportunity, but finance remains the critical barrier. The climate and biodiversity crises could be a powerful catalyst for positive change, giving us a chance to build a brighter future for the planet and future generations. Yet unmet funding promises continue to obstruct our progress. I believe that positive change is on the horizon. It feels difficult and complex, but I am hopeful that we can meet these challenges. It was a joy to collaborate and connect with so many incredible people in Cali. Many thanks to Scott Edwards Melissa Wright Jonathan Kelsey Pepe Clarke Dustin Cranor, APR Mirella von Lindenfels Jenelle Eli Emma Ackerley Nathalie Rey Julien Anseau Maria (Masha) Kalinina Edward Davey Alessia Mortara Freya Newman Irene Suarez Perez Liz Gallagher Anna Lappé Soojin Kim Rachel Parkes Joi Lee

Quick #COP16 takeaway post: Three must-have ingredients for every COP... 1) CREATIVITY 🎨: From the green zone's immersive Indigenous art installations to the interactive panel discussions and protests in the blue zone - creativity was abundant at COP16. The Greenhouse Communications team also had the chance to see Cosmo Sheldrake live, performing his new “Song of the Cedars”. It reminded us that nature is the original artist and is the source of so much inspiration and action. Creativity of this kind is a must at every COP 🙏 . 2) COURAGE 💪: Witnessing the courage and compassion of those fighting for a just world is both a privilege and a responsibility. We worked closely with experts from BirdLife International, Business for Nature, World Resources Institute, The Nature Conservancy, WWF and more - all tirelessly pushing for greater ambition. Speaking truth to power takes courage, but it is a necessity to make clear what is at stake, demand accountability, and push for real financial commitments. 3) COMMUNITY 🌍: Over the two weeks, the Greenhouse team managed over 100 media requests for 30+ organisations resulting in hundreds of media articles. Working together as one united group through the Nature Positive Initiative's network ensured we had diverse expertise and voices to share across science, business, finance and civil society. Huge kudos to the team Emily McCoy Gavin Edwards Marco Lambertini Emma Marsden for galvanising this group. A united front sends a clear message to those in power. We also supported the launch of an open letter from 70+ influential leaders calling for ‘a year of united action on climate, nature and food’. 👉 https://lnkd.in/gmqHUMvJ 🇦🇿 Next week, we are in Baku to support the Nature4Climate coalition - and we will bring creativity, courage, and community to COP29! Nature is a critical ally in the fight against climate change, yet our world is collectively failing to deliver the necessary finance. This 'finance' COP must unlock critical funding and ambitious policies to protect, manage and restore our natural world. Only five days until #COP29! 🌍 📣 All eyes are on this year’s conference to see if it can deliver on bold climate goals. The focus of this so-called 'Finance COP' will be to establish a New Collective Quantified Goal on climate finance for developing nations. In addition, countries will be announcing their new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and attendees will be calling for more ambitious commitments, as well as scrutinising progress on existing plans and targets. Have you thought about how your communications will cut through the noise? Sunita has got you covered with five pro tips to elevate your COP29 coverage: https://lnkd.in/dvGTGxx8

Did nature and biodiversity get its moment at COP16 Colombia? Here's our take on the good and the bad from the United Nations Biodiversity Conference. The good: ✅ The conference started with a splash, with the Financial Times putting the Nature Positive mission and business action firmly on the agenda with an FT Big Read by Susannah Savage. ✅ Progress was made on ocean protection as a coalition of 11 philanthropies pledged $51.7 million towards identifying and developing marine protected areas, along with a new text from COP16 encouraging the adoption of the High Seas Treaty. ✅ We witnessed a watershed moment for Indigenous representation, with Indigenous communities formally incorporated in the official decision-making of the UN biodiversity process, and a digital sequence information fund plan passed, recognising the need to pay for the use of genetic diversity from nature. The bad: ❌ During the conference, a number of seminal new reports - including WWF’s Living Planet report, UN Environment Programme’s Protected Planet report and the IUCN’s Red List - reminded us of the alarming crises we are facing, with over a third of plant and animal species at risk of extinction. ❌ COP16 ended with no clear strategy for raising $200 billion a year to finance nature conservation and no plan for how biodiversity targets will be monitored. And while there was a wave of financial commitments made in Calí, they were insufficient to bridge the current financing gap. ❌ Environmentally harmful subsidies, which still sit at around $2.6 trillion, were not addressed - despite commitments made two years ago at COP15. Despite it not being the outcome we hoped for, we are proud to have supported so many organisations on the ground at COP16 through our work on the Together for the Ocean campaign and Nature Positive Pavilion. From the SBTN new adopters announcements to the World Resources Institute's LandMark tool to support Indigenous rights and the Wildlife Conservation Society’s announcement of new protected waters in Puerto Rico, there was much to celebrate. We also saw policy experts from The Nature Conservancy, WWF, BirdLife International, Conservation International, Bloomberg Philanthropies, Blue Nature Alliance, National Geographic and Campaign for Nature work tirelessly to increase action and implementation. The fight to halt and reverse nature loss continues. After some much-needed rest, we look forward to seeing everyone at COP29 Azerbaijan in Baku to ensure that nature and the ocean are on the climate agenda as well!
