As part of black history month we are running a series of CPD's and talks in our studio. First up is /other - a collective of POC architecture graduates and creatives that centres the marginalised individual within architectural discourse. Grounded in methods of critical questioning and a contemporary culture of diverse expression, /other considers itself a collective whose limits are in flux by constantly reaching out to its growing network of collaborators - peers, architects and various creatives - in order to amplify the voices of the many. Haworth Tompkins
Architecture and Planning
We are a Stirling Prize-winning architectural studio with an international reputation for intelligent, purposeful design
About us
Haworth Tompkins was formed in 1991 by architects Graham Haworth and Steve Tompkins. Our London-based studio has designed buildings in the UK and elsewhere for clients across the public, private and subsidised sectors including schools, galleries, theatres, concert halls, housing, offices, shops and factories. Our buildings are influenced by the specific chemistry of individual places and cultural situations. We put enormous effort into understanding a building's context and the needs of its users, a process which often yields original or unconventional solutions. What they have in common is an approach rather than a stylistic signature. Professionalism and sustainability in the widest sense underpins our creative output. The combination of a relatively small, close-knit team and a carefully limited number of projects in development at any one time enables us to offer an exceptional level of service to our clients. Our work has won over 100 design awards including the 2014 Stirling Prize for the Everyman Theatre, Liverpool. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram @haworthtompkins

Industria Barking has won Commercial Project of the year at this year’s London Construction Awards with the judges commenting ‘the project is an innovative and elegant design solution and a very exciting use of industrial land, inherently sustainable with a powerful visual impact’. The project was designed in collaboration with Ashton Smith Associates Ltd for client Be First Regeneration Limited and represents an innovative and ambitious approach to modern industrial design that densifies and diversifies workspace in a move away from the traditional typology of single-storey, low density ‘sheds’. Congratulations to everyone involved in the project. Haworth Tompkins has completed the transformational redevelopment of The Warburg Institute, University of London, one of the world’s leading centres for the study of art and culture. Founded by Aby Warburg in Hamburg in 1900, the Warburg Institute has been part of the School of Advanced Study, University of London since 1944. Its open-stack Library, Photographic Collection and Archive serve as an engine for interdisciplinary research, postgraduate teaching and a prestigious events and publication programme. It is housed in a historic Charles Holden Building, as part of the University of London’s Bloomsbury campus. The refurbishment project presented a unique opportunity for the re-birth of the Warburg Institute, to open its hidden collections up to new audiences and facilitate a more public-facing programme. The project brief was expanded beyond the repair of the long-neglected fabric and infrastructure, to include new and enhanced spaces, the Institute’s first public gallery, a dramatic 140-seat auditorium, improved teaching spaces and new storage and study areas for the Library, Archives and a state of the art centre for Special Collections. The unique Library Collection, the largest in the world focused on the afterlife of antiquity and the survival and transmission of culture, is housed over four stories preserving Aby Warburg’s original system of organisation with one floor each devoted to subjects of Image, Word, Orientation and Action. A reconfiguration to the layout of the shelving has expanded stack areas to make space for new acquisitions to the growing collection of 360,000 volumes, and it has opened up the library to natural light. Other enhancements throughout the building incorporate the refurbishment of the reception area, in which the newly restored Coade stone frieze of the nine muses of the arts and sciences is installed to welcome visitors upon entry. “Through the Warburg Renaissance project we set out to honour the legacy of both its architect Charles Holden and founder Aby Warburg, while opening its unique contents up to new audiences. Striking a balance between modernisation of the Institute’s publicly accessible aspects, alongside the preservation of its extraordinary character and atmosphere has been a forensic and important process. Its architectural re-birth will allow continued discovery and enjoyment of the collections for many future generations.” Elizabeth Flower, Project Architect, Haworth Tompkins https://shorturl.at/Fhv0O The Warburg Institute, University of London, Quinn London Ltd, Artelia, Assent BC, Price & Myers, Skelly & Couch, Gillieron Scott Acoustic Design, B Sussed, The Fire Surgery, Alan Baxter Ltd. 📸 Hufton + Crow Nick Hufton 📸 Fred Howarth Dan Tassell, Nigel Hetherington, Laura Haylock, Elizabeth Flower #HaworthTompkins #WarburgRenaissance #Renovation #Restoration #ArtandCulture #ArchitecturalDesign #CulturalHeritage #HistoricPreservation #LondonArchitecture #CharlesHolden

✨ First look at the Warburg Renaissance! ✨ We are excited to announce the completion of the Warburg Renaissance project, a transformative £14.5 million renovation that reimagines the Warburg Institute’s historic Bloomsbury building. Since 1958, our Charles Holden-designed home has served as a leading centre for the study of global cultural history and the role of images in society. Now, with this comprehensive renovation, we are prepared to continue that mission into the future. Key upgrades include a state of the art 110-seat auditorium, which will host a dynamic programme of public lectures, concerts, and film screenings, expanded research and teaching spaces, and our first ever public gallery. This new space will allow us to showcase treasures from our remarkable collections, beginning with the 'Memory & Migration: The Warburg Institute 1926–2024' display, which highlights the Warburg Institute’s journey from Hamburg to London. Led by the award-winning Haworth Tompkins, this project ensures that the Warburg Institute will remain a hub of scholarly activity, public engagement, and interdisciplinary exploration. We are thrilled to share the first images of these stunning new spaces and look forward to welcoming visitors, researchers, and students to explore the next chapter in the Institute’s history. After four years of consultation, collaboration and conversations with local communities and stakeholders, we’re proud to announce the submission of the Hybrid Planning Applications to reinstate Earls Court as a global destination for wonder. Our 44 acre masterplan will come alive with music, arts and entertainment. As central London’s largest cleared development opportunity, this is more than just a construction project—it is the reimagining of an iconic part of London into a dynamic, inclusive, and sustainable neighbourhood designed for all stages of life. Earls Court will be a better piece of City, providing a blueprint for future generations as a model for how London can evolve to meet the needs of its residents and address the environmental and societal challenges of the future. With nature as the golden thread, the long empty site will be transformed as a new neighbourhood with c.4,000 new homes and 12,000 jobs set within 20 acres of new public open and green space. It will reflect its legacy as a hub of innovation and entertainment, be a showcase for clean and climate tech with 2.5 million sq ft of workspace and create a new cultural ecosystem for London with three new anchor venues. The development will be served by a next generation net zero carbon energy network and a net zero operational carbon target setting new standards for sustainable development. The vision for Earls Court, as a place to discover wonder, is guided by four place pillars that underpin everything we do: - A celebration of nature and its ability to connect and revive - A showcase for climate and clean innovation - A cultural ecosystem for future talent - An inspiring neighbourhood designed for all stages of life Head to our website to see our plans: www.earlscourt.com Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eQXb6SRc #earlscourt #discoverwonder

The London Borough of Tower Hamlets has unanimously approved our 4.7 acre ultra-urban industrial and logistics scheme Bromley-by-Bow Industrial Park for client Fabrix. The vision was to set a new standard for how vital urban logistics can be sensitively integrated within the urban fabric and be a positive neighbour to both adjacent industrial estates and residential communities. Well done to everyone involved in getting this over the line, we are looking forward to working with Fabrix and the team to deliver an exemplar innovative industrial development.
