🏢 Project: 16 Chart Street 🌏 Location: London, UK When engineers Heyne Tillett Steel realised they needed more space for their expanding practice, they looked up. The team worked with Ian Chalk Architects, B&K Structures and Stora Enso Wood Products GmbH to extend a new office space, originally a 1930s masonry warehouse, with an Optoppen a – CLT vertical extension –with a distinctive saw-tooth roof. Director Andy Heyne says: “We wanted to create a studio which embodies the culture and values of the business, reflecting our approach to low-carbon design and materials, our commitment to retrofit, reuse and expressive structure, and our culture of continuous learning. The new top floor provides a flexible, column-free space for collaboration and interaction, featuring 10-metre long northlight windows, where we host our weekly practice lunches and technical discussions, as well as an array of different community events and activities.” The additional storey on the roof, plus a new side extension and central staircase, has created a lighter, airier, energy-efficient workspace – and added some extra interest to the Hoxton skyline!
