This year’s #AJArchitectureAwards highlights outstanding architectural achievements that inspire and redefine our built environment. This week, we highlight remarkable projects in the Civic category, including Storyteller on Sidcup High Street. Accommodating a public library, cinema and housing, this scheme is a great example of London’s public sector supporting projects in outer London conditions that combine intensification with genuine investment in place. The Acorn House team celebrated the topping out of the building at a ceremony in Kings Cross earlier this month. Designed for our client Precis Advisory Ltd., and housing provider Newlon Housing Trust, this entirely affordable housing development will deliver 33 new homes, 60% of which are to be Social Affordable Rent (set by Camden Council), and 40% as Intermediate Rent tenures (in line with GLA household income caps). The building also provides flexible and affordable office space, a community room, play space and a retail unit for a local business on the ground floor. Acorn House is being built as part of a two-site development, paired with the new Laboratories building at nearby Belgrove House, which will be MSD’s UK Discovery Centre and Headquarters located in the heart of the Knowledge Quarter. Works will now begin to complete the façade and start the fit-out, with the building expected to open in 2025.

A well-timed walk from the Allford Hall Monaghan Morris office last week meant I got to see our emerging project at Angel Square in the setting sun. The shaped GRC frame, fluted spandrels and unitised cladding are progressing nicely - reshaping this heavy retrofit scheme and redefining the gateway to Angel. Next steps - our ‘butterfly’ roof! Good luck to Allies and Morrison, Porphyrios Associates, Townshend Landscape Architects and developer and asset manager, Related Argent for tonight’s RIBA #StirlingPrize for the King’s Cross Masterplan. We’re proud to have been part of the realisation of this transformative long-term project, from earlier design reviews and proposals to the completion of two buildings, 10 Lewis Cubitt Square and 1 Keskidee Square, as well as fit-outs for two more. Our work, and that of many other practices, has been the proof of the masterplan's success in creating a thriving, characterful new (and old) piece of London.

NEWS: One Fairchild Street receives planning approval This week London Borough of Hackney unanimously approved One Fairchild Street, a 27-storey office building on Shoreditch High Street, for Rocket Properties. Located on a prominent site within the South Shoreditch Conservation Area, the development will deliver 25,500 square metres of office space, including affordable workspace for start-ups and SMEs, as well as roof terraces, ground-level retail space, and market stalls. At last night's British Council for Offices National Awards, two AHMM projects were crowned winners! 1 New Park Square won the Commercial Work Place category and Tower Hamlets Town Hall was named winner of the Refurbished/Recycled category. Designed for Parabola, 1 New Park Square is AHMM's first Cat A office in Scotland, and the first completed building of the Edinburgh Park development. AHMM's Co-Founder Paul Monaghan is one of 10 architects selected by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan to support the quality of London's high streets and public spaces as part of the Town Architects pilot project. TQEC Research Hub  has been shortlisted for an Insider South West Property Award in the Development of the Year category. One of the first completed components of the wider University of Bristol Innovation Campus, the Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus (TQEC) Research Hub reinvents two Victorian industrial buildings that were once part of the Bristol Gas Light Company: the Retort House, which can be dated back to 1821, and the Coal Shed, circa 1885, into a dedicated state-of-the-art research facility for the Bristol Digital Futures Institute. The design principles for the new research facility focus on a light touch approach, making the most of the building’ idiosyncrasies while also delivering a high-quality academic building that suits the needs of its users, creating specialist facilities, workspaces, collaboration areas, and training and meeting rooms.
