Welcoming today's launch of the government's plans for an Industrial Strategy our CEO, Katherine Bennett CBE said: “The UK needs a bold and ambitious industrial strategy. With the stability it provides, businesses can harness innovation to drive productivity, scale-up supply chains, transform their approach to skills and compete on a global stage. “The UK manufacturing sector is the engine behind our net zero ambitions and sustainable economic growth; the Green Paper, with its recognition of advanced manufacturing, will provide an invaluable framework for the next ten years. “This roadmap and the subsequent industrial strategy will enable the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, with the support of Innovate UK, to accelerate the industrial transformation the UK needs to attract major investment, secure high-value jobs and build national resilience.” #industrialstrategy #industrialpolicy Department for Business and Trade Jonathan Reynolds MP Clare Barclay

A new report, released as part of the Women in Manufacturing initiative, has found that while the gender pay gap in manufacturing is narrowing, the UK lags behind other leading countries in women’s participation. The Women in UK Manufacturing 2024 report offers actionable insights for businesses, industry associations and government officials to improve diversity and inclusion in the sector. The Institute for Manufacturing (IfM), University of Cambridge, High Value Manufacturing Catapult and Innovate UK established the Women in Manufacturing initiative in 2022 with the aim of raising women’s participation in manufacturing to 35% by 2035. A brilliant achievement for the AMRC and Boeing. Celebrating the award win, Katherine Bennett CBE, High Value Manufacturing Catapult CEO, said: "Congratulations to the The University of Sheffield AMRC and Boeing on winning this acclaimed award. Their dynamic long-term partnership is a blueprint for deep collaborative alliances, underpinned by HVM Catapult investment and support from Innovate UK. "The impact in South Yorkshire is a powerful example of how academia, HVM Catapult centres and industry can work together to not only solve the biggest engineering challenges facing our planet, but also create an environment that attracts inward investment and ultimately reshapes entire communities." Innovate UK | Catapult Network | Royal Academy of Engineering
In case you missed it 📣 Last week, the long-term collaboration between the AMRC and Boeing won the 2024 Bhattacharyya Award. More than 23 years after our initial partnership, the AMRC and Boeing have bridged the traditional gap between industry and academia, creating 2,500 jobs, £350 million of inward investment, and over 2,000 apprentices trained. A new report from the High Value Manufacturing Catapult has called for an innovative approach to product design. 'Sustainable by design' makes the case to thoroughly integrate the three pillars of sustainability: planet, people, and profit. The report, released on National Manufacturing Day, examines key concepts for the development and piloting of a design framework that can bring a new generation of sustainable materials, products and services to market. In the report foreword, Professor Chris Dungey, Chief Technology Officer at HVM Catapult, said: “We require a system that encourages the adoption of green products and services, and regulations that promote and prioritise corporate social responsibility. By aligning market incentives with sustainable practices, it is possible to create a way forward that supports both prosperity and planetary health." A Labour party conference with UK industry firmly on the agenda. In his speech today, Keir Starmer committed to 'a modern industrial strategy'. Yesterday, High Value Manufacturing Catapult CEO, Katherine Bennett CBE, had the opportunity to ask him how industry could work with government to drive economic growth. In response, the prime minister vowed to work with HVM Catapult to grow the economy, create wealth and de-risk private investment. It came after Rt Hon Rachel Reeves said the government will publish plans for the strategy next month 'to help break down barriers to regional growth, speed ahead to net zero and clean power by 2030, and build prosperity on strong and secure foundations.' Jonathan Reynolds MP said the strategy would enable the country to 'win a great share of investment in the UK of the industries that will contribute the most to our future growth.' And Peter Kyle added that the government is 'working to make Britain the most attractive place to invest, start-up and grow businesses in science and technology.' MTC - Manufacturing Technology Centre brought its factory in a box to Liverpool, highlighting the benefits of digital and automation technology for the creation of skilled jobs, addressing productivity issues, and driving growth and investment. WMG Business hosted a panel discussion on “Mission Critical – Why Innovation and Skills are Vital to Delivering the UK’s Missions” featuring Skills Minister Baroness Smith, West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker, MD of WMG Robin Clark, and Helen Foord from McLaren Automotive Ltd. And CPI CEO, Frank Millar, was on a panel at the BioIndustry Association (BIA) Association’s fringe event discussing ‘How UK biotech can drive climate solutions with global impact’. 📸 Image: The prime minister and chancellor visiting MTC earlier this year. #IndustrialStrategy #UKmfg #Industry #labourpartyconference
