We're proud to have supported SLOCAT, through UK Aid funding, to this week run a session at the regional meeting of #UNESCAP member states and other stakeholders in #Bangkok. The session explored the alignment of national #lowcarbon #transport roadmaps, Nationally Determined Commitments (NDCs) and Long-term Low Emission Development Strategies (LT-LEDs). The work is part of new #research from HVT combining the technical knowledge and political influence of SLOCAT Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport, The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), and Asian Development Bank (ADB) to support #policymakers in the region in the elaboration of the next NDCs and to commit to achievable goals. They will also provide thought leadership and stakeholder engagement towards the implementation of the UN Decade of #Sustainable Transport. Senior Transport Adviser within Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Elizabeth Jones, gave opening remarks before experts presented global #climatechange policy processes and initiatives and discussed areas of overlap between national strategies and these global processes. Representatives spoke from UNFCCC UN, SLOCAT, Asian Transport Outlook and WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities. #Asia #mobility #transportpolicy

Last week, HVT research was presented at Southern Africa's premier #transport conference, a key forum for the debate into current transport-related issues. The Annual Southern African Transport Conference #SATC24, back for its 42nd edition in Pretoria, #SouthAfrica took as it's theme this year, “Upskilling and reskilling the transport industry for current and future challenges”. Joseph Haule explained how HVT #research powers change: - By creating an understanding for decision makers and practitioners of the issues and challenges to creating #sustainable and #resilient transport. - By building knowledge, skills and attitudes of researchers, policy makers and others involved in our work. - Our research leads directly and indirectly to instrumental changes in policy, programme and transport practices. A new report by Transport for Cairo tackles the lack of documentation and #bestpractices in the sector by conducting capacity needs assessments. Published today in India's most widely-read English language newspaper, The Times Of India, research into the impact of soaring temperatures on Delhi's pedestrians. The study is part of an HVT project carried out by the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IITD) which aims to improve heat action plans in India's cities. The team at IITD shed light on a critical issue that #Delhi residents face: the city’s streets are becoming increasingly unworkable due to extreme heat. This research uncovers the pressing need for enhanced #urbanplanning to protect pedestrians from such high temperatures. It's a resource to help policymakers and #transport providers devise effective ways to protect women and girls in #Africa from #sexualharassment on #publictransport. Developed by EMPOWER Project Africa, the tool is now being applied in 10 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. 2024 has been a busy year so far for the team, as they carry out training workshops across the continent. HVT supports #heatactionday 2023 was the hottest year on record, according to the World Meteorological Organization, with the average person experiencing 26 more extremely hot days, Everyone can be at risk from extreme heat, but its impacts are disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable, especially in countries like #India where more than 50 people have died over the past three days due to a brutal #heatwave. A new HVT project carried out by the Transportation Research and Injury Prevention Programme(TRIPP)IIT Delhi explores the exposure of #women commuters to hot weather in #Delhi and looks at their #adaptation capacity. Its findings will help to design an improved heatwave action plan, aimed at reducing exposure and vulnerabilities across all gender and income groups. Wouldn't it be helpful to be able to locate, count and log everything on the roads in a given city at the touch of a button? Computer Vision is a new tool developed by Integrated Transport Planning (ITP) that does just that. In his blog, Giles Lipscombe explains how this tool can produce high level transport data for an entire city, all for a very low cost, making it ideal to support better transport projects in LMIC cities where collection is currently very difficult, and data sparse. ITP's project, Computer Vision for Public Transport, is part of HVT's T-TRIID programme.
