About us
As architects, landscape architects and urban designers, we create award winning buildings, living landscapes and thriving urban spaces, using inventive design to solve real life challenges. Each of our projects is different but the driving force behind every one is the desire to create an environment that is inherently beautiful and functional. Every one of our projects starts with the people we’re designing for. We work side-by-side with communities and clients, to find out what they want, what they know, and what they need. We really believe that good design can transform lives – helping people to live more comfortably, neighbourhoods to thrive and businesses to grow. It’s why we put people at the heart of everything we do. Our long tradition of research and advocacy also means that we encourage others to follow our lead in creating better spaces, in particular when it comes to the critical issues of design standards and sustainability. From our design studios in London and Manchester, we work on housing, education, health, arts and commercial projects of all shapes and sizes across the country.

Our proposals to redevelop the Upton and Raynham Estate in Enfield received planning permission at last Tuesday’s committee! The new design provides 135 affordable homes, new public amenities and landscaped areas, a nursery and flexible community spaces. The project prioritises #community interaction by placing new public realm and play areas around a central green link and a new public square, creating new pedestrian and cycling routes, encouraging active travel and separating the site from the proximity to the North Circular Road. All homes are designed with a fabric-first approach, prioritising the use of renewables and low carbon energy sources. All homes will be heated via Enfield’s waste to heat initiative and are strategically orientated to provide dual aspect homes with natural ventilation, daylight and benefiting from solar exposure in winter months. The new proposals for Upton and Raynham will create a safe and healthy neighbourhood through collaborative design and considered placemaking. #architecture #design #sustainable #housing #placemaking

Our work for the University of the Arts London transformed the former Wimbledon College of Arts into an internationally recognised, entirely performance-orientated campus. Located within the Merton Hall Road Conservation Area, we were appointed to reimagine the existing campus and deliver a state-of-the-art performance education centre. We adapted and improved college grounds to meet the university’s vision and evolving curriculum requirements. The new facilities offer flexible and versatile spaces for education, including purpose-built performance and rehearsal studios and workshop spaces tailored to the set and costume design courses. Both the existing theatre and library underwent significant refurbishment and extension. Last week, at Futurebuild: Rania Kapitani talked about the Essex Embodied Carbon Study over a Pechakucha-style presentation. This is only the third evidence-base document that supports embodied carbon policy in the UK. Aimed at everyone across the built environment, from design and delivery teams like architects, engineers, developers, and contractors to policy makers within local authorities aiming to set carbon targets within their local plans. Clare Murray and Shaun Gannon presented Ashley Road, a project that will provide 272 new highly sustainable homes in Haringey. The development has been designed to meet Passivhaus certification, in order to achieve as close to zero carbon as possible, alongside low carbon energy, renewables and low embodied carbon. We had some very special visitors at our George Green office recently - Year 2 students (ages 6-7) from Mayflower Primary School in Poplar. As part of their learning about different jobs, they came to explore careers in the housing sector and hear from our amazing colleagues about the work we do. The children had the chance to: 📱hear from Angel Boateng, our Marketing and Comms Officer, about the power of storytelling in her role 🙌 learn from Sabiha Khanam, our Volunteer Partnerships Manager, about how people can give back to their communities 🌳 discover how kate digney, a Landscape Architect from Levitt Bernstein, has helped design local outdoor spaces 🏠 chat with Lukeman Miah, one of our Housing Officers, about what makes his job so rewarding The students came with brilliant curiosity - one of our favourite moments was when they asked, "How long have you been working here?" and after hearing the answer, responded with, "I wasn’t even born!" 😆 A huge thank you to Terri Calbraith, our Communities and Neighbourhood Coordinator, for organising such an engaging and inspiring session. Hopefully, we’ve planted some seeds for future careers in housing! #HousingSector #CommunityEngagement #EastLondon #OnlyInTowerHamlets #TowerHamlets

“The NLA housing summit neatly communicated the complexity of mass housing delivery in London, but the mood was positive.” Last week, Associates Georgina Revell and Alexis Kalli attended the NLA Housing Summit to hear a cross section of people speaking about how London can contribute to the housing targets. Tom Copley opened the day with the stark fact that we need an additional 88,000 homes per year – something we haven’t achieved since the 1930s. Housing, specially affordable housing, was at the top of the agenda but viability makes any development tricky at the moment. Partnerships seem to be able to create the stability needed to get projects off the ground and despite all the challenges, the mood was positive. – We look forward to helping build high quality homes for Londoners. #housing #design #architecture #development #london

Last week, we joined Dinah Bornat to celebrate the launch of her new book 'All to Play For' which shows the importance of engaging with children and young people in housing design and presents successful international case studies of how this can be achieved. The book includes an article written by our own Jo McCafferty and Rachel Stevenson about Peter Tábori’s Highgate New Town, a modernist estate that continues to be a reference for child friendly housing.
