Updates

  • Notably absent from The Chancellor’s growth speech yesterday was an update on business rates.   However, with many of the UK’s largest employers – already hit by national insurance changes in the last Budget – being its biggest ratepayers, lack of movement and certainty over next year's liabilities is likely to be a further brake on private sector investment and growth. Here, Business Rates Partner Bruce Wilson weighs in on the debate. 🔗https://lnkd.in/dSSa9CGz #MEAdvisory #MERating #BusinessRates

What do industry experts say is the key challenge for delivering inclusive economies in London? Our Inclusive Economies webinar brought together leaders from the public, private and third sectors. In response to today’s growth agenda, we asked the speakers what placemakers can do differently to deliver economic development for all Londoners. Here’s what they said. Let us know what you think in the comments. ⬇️ Remove the emphasis upon ‘local’ when setting S106 commitments to enable apprentices to move from site to site and achieve their qualifications, therefore helping to reduce the skills shortage. (Caroline Richardson, Countryside Partnerships) 📈 Resources are tight - we need to work in partnership, share experience and become increasingly sophisticated about demonstrating impact to build support in social value. (Rob Bristow, London Borough of Lambeth) 🥐 Partner with organisations supporting refugees: this is your invitation to connect with Martin and eat better pastries and brownies! (Martín Cosarinsky Campos, Breadwinners) 🤝 There’s strong overlap between the inclusive economies goals of public, private, and third sectors – focus on this because it affects us all and we all have a role to play. (Morgan Reece, Montagu Evans) 📢 Put evidenced-based decision-making at the centre of change. Drawing on both lived experience and quantitative data means we champion informed innovation. (Dr Saffron Woodcraft, UCL Institute for Global Prosperity) 💭 The sector can play a better role in translating the national growth mission and making it relevant for local communities, starting with better evidencing of impact. (Will Temple, PRD) 🗣️ Forums – like this webinar – are essential for sharing our intellectual property and experience. We need economies of scale to deliver results with impact in the backdrop of reducing budgets. Our ambition is that everybody in Waltham Forest enjoys a quality life. (Jonathan Martin, London Borough of Waltham Forest Forest) Our Inclusive Economies program asks what steps local authorities and their partners can take to create economic development that raises baseline wellbeing for all. Find out more via the link in the comments below. Thanks to Montagu Evans and Countryside Partnerships for supporting this program.
