In 2023, Sistah Space acquired our refuge. The refuge would be a safe space for our service users fleeing domestic abuse. Part of our #ADecadeofDedication fundraising campaign is to make this refuge operational so we can house survivors. If you would like to be apart of making this happen, you can donate to our 10 year campaign here: https://lnkd.in/eggVhama

Harpreet’s story is heartbreaking, but sadly not unique. Too many migrant survivors face impossible choices—trapped between the fear of abuse and the fear of deportation, with nowhere to turn. Every survivor, regardless of their immigration status, deserves to be heard, believed, and supported to safety. Yet, right now, migrant survivors with insecure immigration status are being left behind. They are too often denied access to the specialist support they need, putting their lives at further risk. No survivor should have to choose between safety and the threat of deportation. We continue to call on the Government to take urgent action: 🔷 Introduce a firewall between statutory services and Immigration Enforcement, so migrant survivors can seek justice and life-saving support without fear. 🔷 Provide long-term, sustainable funding for ‘by and for’ specialist domestic abuse services, ensuring that survivors with insecure immigration status receive the tailored, culturally competent support they need. 🔷Expand access to vital support, including refuge spaces and financial assistance, so that no survivor is left without a safe route out of harm. The Domestic Abuse Act promised protection for all survivors—but without adequate funding and policy change, that promise remains out of reach for migrant women. If you or someone you know needs specialist support, these organisations provide vital, expert help: - Al-Hasaniya Moroccan Women's Centre - IKWRO - WOMEN'S RIGHTS ORGANISATION - Southall Black Sisters - Sistah Space - Shakti Women's Aid

Jamelatu Tsiwah was found dead at a house in Croydon last Monday. She was 31 years old. A man was charged with her murder on the 22nd of January. He was known to Jamelatu. In the UK, a woman is killed by a man every 3 days. In the majority of cases, the perpetrator is known to the victim. We are saddened to learn about yet another woman who has had her life unjustly cut short due to male violence. Our condolences are with Jamelatu's loved ones. #VAWG #JamelatuTsiwah

Marianne Kilonzi was found dead in her London flat earlier this month. The suspect in her murder is believed to be known to her and police are not looking for anyone else. Violence Against Women and Girls in the UK is occurring at an alarming rate, with over 70 women killed by men in 2024. Our thoughts remain with Marianne Kilonzi's loved ones. #MarianneKilonzi #VAWG

This year will mark 10 years of Sistah Space: #ADecadeofDedication. To commemorate this occasion we have launched a fundraising campaign to ensure we meet our goals for the next chapter at Sistah Space. We are a small grassroots, unfunded charity so donations contribute massively to the work we are able to do. Kiena Dawes was just 23 years old when she died by suicide due to the domestic violence she suffered. She left a note stating "I was murdered" and that Ryan Wellings was responsible. Wellings was found not guilty of manslaughter but guilty of assault and coercive & controlling behaviour over a two year period. DCI Fallows commented after the verdict that Wellings "took Kiena's love and in return launched a concerted campaign of emotional, mental and physical abuse". This case highlights the link between domestic abuse and suicide, something that ought to be considered more. Domestic abusers break the spirits of their victims and deserve to be held accountable for the devastation they cause. Our thoughts are with Kiena's loved ones and all women who have lost their lives due to domestic abuse. #KienaDawes #DomesticAbuse #VAWG
