🔜 Why must Government rapidly embrace policy changes ahead of the UK Steel Strategy's publication? While the Steel Strategy is under careful development - and should run its course - there is a critical opportunity for the UK Government to establish new measures now before it is finalised, as the EU this week announced its Action Plan. For example, Government should urgently strengthen UK steel safeguard quotas for 1 April - at the same timescale the EU has committed to for its steel sector - in response to the US steel tariffs which slapped 25% on all imports from the UK and the rest of the world. At this week's House of Commons Business and Trade Select Committee, panellists from Tata Steel UK, British Steel, Community Union and the Steel Council all agreed that trade diversion into the UK, potentially flooding our market, and speed were their biggest concerns.

  • Steel must be part of a strong industrial strategy ⚡ The UK Government can take immediate steps to secure the competitiveness of our business and sector today. 🗣️ “Today, the UK steel industry faces significant challenges, from economic uncertainty and high energy costs to the impact of US tariffs and global overcapacity. A successful and modern industrial strategy must recognise that meaningful change takes time, but a clear long-term vision is essential." - Rajesh N Read more in the comments 👇 #GreenSteelFuture | #TataSteel | #GreenSteelmaking | #UKManufacturing

⬆️ EU raises the bar on steel support – UK must act now The European Commission has unveiled its bold Action Plan for Steel and Metals, which will deliver comprehensive measures to protect and strengthen the European steel industry. With global overcapacity, coupled with rising energy costs, and new US tariffs and forthcoming trade diversion intensifying pressure, the EU’s rapid response highlights the urgency of the moment. Key measures include: ·       Ensure an affordable and secure energy supply for the sector ·       Prevent carbon leakage ·       Expand and protect European industrial capacities ·       Promote circularity ·       De-risking decarbonisation ·       Protect quality industrial jobs Many of the new EU Commission policies align directly with proposals UK Steel has already put to Government. The UK must now match this ambition to avoid falling behind. While the Steel Strategy is under careful development, and should run its course, there is a critical opportunity for the UK Government to establish new measures now before it is finalised. For example, to strengthen UK steel safeguard quotas for 1 April, at the same timescale the EU has committed to for its steel sector. ➡️ Gareth Stace, Director-General, UK Steel, said: "The speed and ambition of Ursula von der Leyen’s Steel Action Plan shows what’s possible when governments act decisively. The UK Government should take note. The EU Commission’s plan tackles the same challenges facing UK steel, including high energy prices, trade defences, securing critical raw materials, a stronger Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, and prioritising domestic steel in procurement. “A long-term Steel Strategy matters, but certain actions are needed now. UK Steel has handed clear, worked-up solutions that will reverse our decline to Government. It is time to deliver competitive energy prices, tighten our safeguards against a flood of imports and ensure publicly-funded projects use British-made steel. “The EU has set out a bold and urgent vision for its steel sector. The UK Government must match that ambition and act swiftly to secure the future of our industry before it is too late. We trust it will." 🔗 Our reaction, further information and the link for the EU Plan can be found on our website here: https://lnkd.in/eQVW_zgc #EUPlanforSteel #EuropeanSteel #Steel #TrumpTariffs #SteelStrategy #USTariffs #GreenSteel The European Steel Association (EUROFER)

  • “We’re looking forward to working closely with the Government to ensure a modern Industrial Strategy that works in tandem with the steel strategy.” 📈 Today, our UK CEO, Rajesh N spoke at the House of Commons’ Business and Trade Select Committee for their inquiry into the UK’s Industrial Strategy. We are committed to our decarbonisation programme which includes working with the UK Government to build a state-of-the-art Electric Arc Furnace. While there are challenges facing the UK’s steel sector, we look forward to working with the Government to improve the industrial competitiveness of the UK steel industry. New research published by UK Steel today suggests a new approach to tackle the uncompetitive electricity prices our sector is facing: They suggest a new mechanism which will: 1️⃣ Provide price parity with the lowest-cost European competitors by fixing electricity prices for the steel sector, increasing global competitiveness 🔌 2️⃣ Protect against price volatility, enabling long-term planning and investment in low-carbon technologies such as Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs) ⚡ 3️⃣Share risk and reward, with the sector paying back the Government when prices fall below the agreed strike price🤝 Find the link to the full report in the comments 👇 #UKSteel | #SteelIndustry | #ElectricityPrices | #EnergyCosts

⚡ UK steel is at an electricity disadvantage – and UK Steel’s proposal will fix it Currently, UK steelmakers pay up to 50% more for electricity than competitors in France and Germany. This isn’t just a cost issue; it’s a competitiveness crisis. High and volatile energy prices are holding back investment, weakening our supply chains, limiting jobs and putting the UK’s green transition at risk. As featured in The Guardian, Reuters News Agency, The Telegraph, The Economic Times and The Manufacturer, our latest report, commissioned from an independent consultancy, sets out a clear solution: a Contract for Difference (CfD) for the steel sector. This mechanism would: ✅ Stabilise electricity costs, ensuring price parity with Europe ✅ Boost investment in green steel production, including Electric Arc Furnaces ✅ Protect jobs and strengthen the UK’s industrial base Other countries already support their steel sectors against energy price volatility with such mechanisms. The UK must act now – or risk falling further behind. 📖 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/epbM5dSP #UKSteel #EnergyCosts #Competitiveness #NetZero #Manufacturing #GreenSteel Frank Aaskov
