The work to deliver our £2 million upgrade of the sewerage network in Chippenham has been completed! 🛠️ This major investment includes a new 250,000-litre stormwater storage tank and significant sewer enhancements, where more than 500 metres of new sewer pipe has been installed within local roads. The project will ease flooding during heavy rain and reduce discharges to the River Avon. We're grateful to the Chippenham community, Wiltshire Council and all partners for their support throughout this project. #Chippenham #FloodingInvestment #RiverAvon

What better way to celebrate open data than hosting a hackathon event! We were delighted to invite colleagues and academia to join our event in partnership with Stream: Unlocking Water Data for the Open Knowledge Foundation’s Open Data Day. Our one-day hack saw teams going head-to-head to explore datasets and develop new ideas to improve water quality in the environment. We’re incredibly proud of the teams, the progress they made and the impressive presentations of their ideas. Congratulations to our winning team “KTM” 👏
There’s something special about a hackathon. The excitement when ideas start flying, the deep focus when teams dive into their projects, and the energy when it all comes together. That’s exactly what happened during #OpenDataDay 2025, where researchers, developers, and students came together to build solutions that could change how we monitor, predict, and protect our water environment. Over the course of the week, three major events took place: 🔹 Wessex Water Hackathon : A one-day challenge where early career professionals and University of Bath students explored how open data can improve storm overflow monitoring. 🏆 Winning Team: Katherine Hedges , Tomo Horman, Mohsin Surani 🔹 V-KEMS Virtual Study Group: A deep dive into geospatial and water quality data, focusing on how better models could help predict pollution events. 🔹 DreamCode Hackathon: A three-day, student-led event at Northumbria University, where teams worked late into the night to build groundbreaking solutions. 🏆 1st Place: Stefan Petrovic, Arjun Nair, Elliot Massey, (Hydro Hackers) 🚀 A huge thank you to our sponsors and supporters who made this all possible: Wessex Water, Esri UK, Northumbria University, Bentley Systems, Chartwells, NWG (Northumbrian Water Group), buildingSMART International, V-KEMS. And of course, none of this would have happened without the incredible people working behind the scenes to bring it all together. A massive shoutout to: Melissa T., Andrew Myers, Elysia Moore, Dr. Stelina Beka Liz Oakley, Emma P., Tara Lee, Jon Weeks, Sophie Sherriff, Craig Hayes, Connor Smyth, Kiaran Ratcliffe, Izzy Morton, Stefan Mordue, Jo Bradley, Amber Swift, Barrie-John Lancaster, David Allen, Faith Ojeabulu, Jack Redgate. These events were about solving real-world water challenges. Some of the projects are already open-source, proving that when open data is accessible, real change happens faster! Want to be part of next year’s Open Data events? Join our community and stay in the loop!📌 (Link in comments) #OpenData #Hackathons #WaterQuality #Innovation #StreamOpenData

Check out this excellent video from Bristol Avon Rivers Trust about the work being done to reconnect rivers to their floodplains, create vital habitats, and restore the balance of nature 💙 We have committed to doing even more to help protect and restore the water environment, and we’re proud to work in partnership with Bristol Avon Rivers Trust and other organisations across our region as part of a catchment-based approach in our Sustainable Solutions for Water and Nature initiative 🤝 By working together, these partnerships aim to share local knowledge, identify local challenges and deliver cost-effective solutions with multiple benefits. In addition to this catchment partnership work, we’re spending millions of pounds every month to upgrade our water recycling centres and sewerage network to improve river health and coastal waters. This includes progressively reducing and eliminating the discharge of untreated sewage from storm overflows.
🌊 Restoring Our Rivers: BART’s Work in Action! 🌿 Check out this fantastic video by our very own CEO Simon Hunter showcasing our work to protect and restore rivers across the Bristol Avon catchment! From tackling pollution to enhancing biodiversity, we’re working with communities, farmers, and partners to create healthier waterways for wildlife and people. 🎥 Watch now: https://lnkd.in/e8REanXQ 💙 If you love our rivers, please like, share, and support our work! A £5 million investment to help protect water quality in the River Frome in south Gloucestershire has been completed this spring ✅ The final touches to a trio of projects in Frampton Cotterell that will help to reduce the impact of untreated water being discharged into the 20-mile-long watercourse have been carried out. Three new below-ground tanks have been built in the village, adding nearly a million litres of additional storage to our sewer network. This will improve how we manage stormwater during heavy rain and reduce the risk of untreated water being discharged from storm overflows. Thank you to the local community for your patience during this important work! We are continuing to invest around the region to progressively reduce the discharge of untreated wastewater, with plans to spend £580 million over the next five years to reduce the operation of storm overflows, introduce more nature-based solutions and promote better rainwater management 🌧️ Visit our website for more details: https://lnkd.in/e2njCjeS #RiverFrome #WaterQuality #CommunityInvestment

Today is #WorldPlumbingDay 💧🔧 Around 500,000 homes in the UK have a misconnection, meaning a wastewater pipe is wrongly connected to a surface water sewer. This means dirty water from their home could be draining directly into and polluting a river or stream. Here's Nikki, our Senior Environmental Detection Dog Handler, to explain how we are working to find misconnections using our adorable detection puppies 🐕👏 For more information, visit: https://lnkd.in/ejmrpsRi #DetectionDogs CAPE
